Does anyone know if ExCel has increased its file input size? The old size was 255 fields to a record.

Don't quote me, but I am sure it over a million now. Or maybe that's rows?
I know for sure you can import an entire BRIS single data file now.
Good news for sure.
Check out a student version....I got some nice prices when I was looking over the weekend.

Excel 2007 has 1 million rows, 16,000 columns. I read on the MS excel website that excel 2007 uses an xml format which dramatically reduces the file size due to compression. Try typing your question in the Google search engine. Should be able to find the answer.

I have been using Excel 2007 for about 2 months now.
Excel 2007 has increased it's column size from 256 to 16,385.
More than enough to handle the Bris Sigle Data File.
You can now parse it completely to get every field. Including the ones that they are experimenting with, and dont tell you what they are in the description.

Also, The number of rows has increased from 65,536 to 1,048,576

So Now We All Have To Buy Ourselves A Plotter To Print All This Data!
(Right!) Just Kidding.... You're On Your Own!

If anyone is interested in using the 2007 version... Be prepared...
There is a bit of a learning curve. The Interface (Menu and Sub-menu System) Has Completely Changed. It looks completely different. It is fully Icon Driven! I am loving it though.

There are so many new features, I could not possibly list them all here.

Those that are die hard Excel users like myself... Will no doubt go nuts over it, once they figure out how to get around it.

My #1 wish for more column fields... and #2 wish has been answered in that you no longer are limited to 3 conditional formats. (I use to get around this by creating Macro after Macro) >>>THERE IS NO LIMIT NOW!<<< Just be methodical and careful not to create a conflicting conditional rule. Also, the new features that are built around the conditional format module IMO are just the coolest features by far. As I have mentioned in many of my other posts, I use Excel consistantly to create my own programs and reports while handicapping the horses. Personally, the best just got better.

If you're not a programmer or VB expert, creating an Array to avoid limitations with (IF) statements now is easier.... In a hurry, and to test how much better it was, (I had over 20 (IF) statements in one calculation and it worked flawlessly) Truthfully, I have no idea how many (IF) statements are possible. Still, 20 is more than the 8 or 9 originally without having to create an array and play programmer.

I would only suggest that you use a PC with a fast processor and a good amount of RAM. I have a Intel Viiv Duo Core Processor (2.8) and 2GB RAM on my desktop at home and it supports the very large files I tend to create. Mainly due to the Video and Audio files I edit.... Make sure you uninstall any older versions of MS Office As Well... It created some havok for me.

Finally, I recently bought a cheap Acer laptop for my vacation trip to Delmar on the weekend of Aug 11... It has a celeron processor... (Yuk!) and was very slow at times, but it still processed the Excel 2007 files.

A Quick Summary Of That Day:
We took it along to mainly to answer email and get to the internet wirelessly from the hotel. But it still did ok to print out my reports on the portable Canon battery operated printer I brought as well. I was with several family members and they were pressuring me to give them some plays. I don't normally play every race on a card, but I had to produce some plays in every race. So there I was Friday night till 2:00 a.m. We'll there were some small hits until the 7th race, when the 2 horse, my second choice on the ML at 15-1 went off at over 40-1. He Won! Needless to say I did not have to pay for dinner that night! Not trying to ramble here, but I had to respond to the post. I give alot of the credit to the latest 2007 version of Excel and what I printed out, as well as having upgraded and re-designing my spreadsheets around this latest version.

I do not work for MS, but I love this version and highly recommend it...
I Hope this answers the question and few others.
Good Luck!

Dutchboy,

Good point and true... It reduces file size due to compression, But it enhances it back, due to the extra amount of data you can now create with the extra columns and rows. I still have files that are much larger than I use to have in older versions. Partly because I am adding new information that calls on colors, calculations and extra data that I could never get it to do before this version.
