Ohio Racing enthusiasts have put up a website explaining their position on Ohio Racing......and the fact that the sport is dying in the State. Some interesting numbers on the site.

http://www.saveohioracing.com/

~from the link~

More than 16,000 Ohioans owe their jobs to horse racing in the state, which also contributes more than $770 million annually to the Ohio economy.

But the track winnings that make raising and training horses financially possible in Ohio are on the decline and can’t compare with purse prizes in other states.

Daily average purse paid in 2006

Ohio
Indiana
Pennsylvania
West Virginia

Thoroughbred
$62,613
$131,140
$106,848
$182,900

Harness
$42,737
$101,217
$77,974
N/A

Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia all pay extra money into purses from slots gaming. Pennsylvania slots play started in fall 2006 and purses are already up as much as 142 percent. Indiana tracks supported by casino slots play have been approved to add slots of their own.

Meanwhile, total wagering – or “handle” – that funds purses paid to race winners in Ohio is down 14.4 percent. From Jan. 1 to May 26, Ohio's handle dropped from $178.8 million to $153.1 million, a difference of $25.8 million. Tax on handle supports home-based care for Ohio seniors, Ohio fairs and Ohio horse breeders.

As Ohio horse racing has declined so has foal production.

Ohio registered 292 Thoroughbred foals in 2006, down from 611 in 1997.

Ohio produced 1,468 Standardbred foals in 2006, down from 1,940 in 1995.

Every four horses stabled at a track, and every eight horses stabled at a farm, generate a job. Feed, forage and veterinary costs each contribute $100 a month to local economies. Mare allocation for foal breeding generates $2,000, and stallion breeding fees generate up to $2,500.

Distributing their signal would be a good place to start.

The ex-BEU simulcast director gave us a contract back in March but the horsemen refused to sign it. The Ohio HBPA told us then that they "don't want to deal with any other rebate shops and would "think seriously about cutting off ALL ADWs after the contracts expire in September."

We would love to have the River and Beulah signals. I'd still be very interested in talking about it if they are. Again, if there are any Ohio horsemen out there reading this, please feel free to contact me at ian@premierturfclub.com

I read about this earlier today and was casually brainstorming about ways they might increase their on track attendance/handle and most of the ideas involved some expense, time and risk.
.
What would be the expense of selling their signal? How long would it take? What's the risk to TDN?

there are some definate concerns as far as ohio racing is concerned, thistledown is only applying for 91 days next year i think it said in the form. just a few yearsa ago they ran 200+ days.

however, beulah and river have both had good numbers the last couple years, i know that last year we (river) had our highest 2 days ever for total handle, as well as had more handle for the year with 14 fewer days than the year prior.

Aren't they locked into 155 days?

i dont know, there was a blib in the form (today or tomorrows edition) that said they were asking for 91, they are running 136 this year i believe.

It's really too bad, particularly if they can do anything to mitigate the problem and aren't doing it.

Ohio has turned down gambling propositons twice in the last five years. The people are idiots. Every Saturday morning you can sit on I-71 south and watch the Tour buses passing thru to get to the Casino boats just east of Cincy..........in Indiana.............

check out the internet address above...............they even have it labled as the Cincinnati casino..........

Right O, they have a right to not send it out and I sure as heck won't be driving to Ohio to bet it.

They can't support that many tracks anyway.
Horsemen better wake up and look around, their "player pool" isn't getting any bigger.
A mild recession would finish off some of these tracks anyway.

Maybe Ohio does not want to call their sport "Thoroughslot racing".

Here's a plan - roadside hot dog carts! Let the horsemen who turned down the PTC ocntract man them. And stock them.

Horsemen will be the death of this industry - they are catered to far too much. As your data suggests, more thanthier interests area at stake. Like the Roc used to say "Know your role!"

Prior to May I used to play RD/TDN-not a lot but occasionaly. Anyway when the two tracks are running one track takes the even race numbers and one the odd. It's a clever idea that prevents overlap and lets people interested in Ohio races see the entire card. Anyway I just glanced at the River Downs program at YouBet. The TDN races #s 1-3-5-7-9-11-13 are all listed as non- wagering events. :bang:

TDN is owned by Magna and controlled by Tracknet

Not only did the Ohio horsemen refuse to sign a deal with PTC, Dave Basler had made some sort of comment that they never would. Then we see this? Wow what a surprise!!
