On this date in 1926 Guy McKinney, driven by Nat Ray, won the first Hambletonian, held at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The purse was $73,451.

On this date in 1980 Lindy's Crown equalled the trotting world record by winning in 1:54.4 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois.

On this date in 1981 Bill Shoemaker became the first jockey to win a $1 million race when he rode John Henry to a nose victory over The Bart in the inaugural Arlington Million.
