Did you know that George Washington okayed electronic surveillance during his administration? This fellow said he did.

QUOTE:" President Washington, President Lincoln, President Wilson, President Roosevelt have all authorized electronic surveillance on a far broader scale."

Maybe he has real inside information that NO one else is in possession of.

Maybe somebody can't take a joke.

Gonzales said that and wasn't joking. He was just ignorant. Either that or he had just read Harry Frankfurt's book on the functions of Bull Shit.

Seriously, I doubt he really believes that George Washington was conducting electronic surveillance. Somebody either can't take a joke or he's been taken out of context.

Gonzales' bona fides were well-known to his bosses. When he was counsel to Texas Governor George W. Bush from 1995 to 1997, Gonzales provided his boss with "scant summaries" on capital punishment cases that "repeatedly failed to apprise the governor of crucial issues: ineffective counsel, conflict of interest, mitigating evidence, even actual evidence of innocence," according to the Atlantic Monthly.

Gonzales prepared 57 such summaries, including one regarding the case of Terry Washington, a mentally retarded man executed for murdering a restaurant manager. The jury was never told about his mental condition. Gonzales's three-page summary of the case for Bush mentioned only that Washington 's defense counsel's 30-page plea for clemency (which covered the mental competency issue) was rejected by the Texas parole board. Bush refused to stay executions in 56 of the 57 cases in which Gonzales wrote abbreviated memos.

WOW what a guy. Fits right in with this "yes man" cabinet.

Was the "evidense" not submitted to the state / federal appeals court?

"We have never seen evidence that he has a fine legal mind, good judgment, or managerial ability," read an editorial in the conservative National Review in late March. "Nor has his
conduct at any stage of this controversy gained our confidence."

I'm actually quite surprised. You would have thought Gonzales wouldn't cut and run, but would fight to defend his actions. First Rove runs, and now Gonzo. Guess it's just GW and Dick on the life raft now.

Frankly, it is a relief. Now if GW could just resign as well.

btw... read this today.

"Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8."

What is it with these Republicans and family values? First Foley, and now
Craig?

nope http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=COH20070421&articleId=5456

same place where this is:"Gonzales' confirmation testimony led the New York Times to opine, "Mr. Bush had made the wrong choice when he rewarded Mr. Gonzales for his loyalty," and the Washington Post to say, "The message Mr. Gonzales left with senators was unmistakable: As attorney general, he will seek no change in practices that have led to the torture and killing of scores of detainees and to the blackening of U.S. moral authority around the world." The Post concluded, "Those senators who are able to reach clear conclusions about torture and whether the United States should engage in it have reason for grave reservations about Mr. Gonzales."

In 2005, Bush said, "Al Gonzales is a great friend of mine. I'm the kind of person, when a friend gets attacked, I don't like it." Eventually, however, Bush will have to unload Gonzales the way he unloaded his friend Donald Rumsfeld. Loyal Republican senators trying to paint Gonzales as incompetent don't want the finger to point higher to the real culprits - Karl Rove, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Marjorie Cohn is a professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, president of the National Lawyers Guild, and the U.S. representative to the executive committee of the American Association of Jurists. Her new book, Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied the Law, will be published in July. See http://www.marjoriecohn.com/.

Too bad he can't said it again:" Yur doin a heck of a job there Brownie!"

Can you say Bill Clinton?

Yeah, the only difference is BC didn't preach the family value dogma and go after minors like Foley. And he at least avoided lewd behavior in a public restroom at an airport like Craig. Jeez.

Yep. You are right. Bill Clinton didn't preach because he had no values.

What you don't get, Sec, is that values are held by US - the voters, who rejected the dimocrates in 200 and 2004 and will do so again in 2008.
We sent a message to the repubs in 2006, but if you think there was any more to it than that, you are crazier than zilly.
