On this date in 1953 the Thoroughbred Racing Associations denounced a plan for off-track betting in New York. John A. Morris, the TRA president, declared: "Although it could mean increased profits for the race tracks, off-course betting would inevitably subordinate racing and bring on an adverse public reaction which would kill a traditionally great sport and an economically significant industry."

On this date in 2006 Direct Withdrawal won the $20,000 Le Cinq Milles five-mile harness race at the Hippodrome De Quebec. Direct Withdrawal, starting from post 16, won the race in 11 minutes, 31 seconds, in a race in which 12 of the 16 horses managed to finish.
