I just bought a used computer with windows XP. Every day so far it freezes
up and the only thing you can do is shut it off and turn it back on. the person
I bought it from says thats common with windows XP.
Another problem is a program I'm trying to download will not run at all.
It worked fine on my old machine.
I have a AMD athlon 1.10 GHz, 896MB of ram
Is that common with XP.

Is that common with XP.Some of the more recent XP updates caused problems with some of the drivers on my system. Both the video driver and the network driver were causing random "blue screen of death" crashes. Once I found the latest versions (which I couldn't get through Windows update -- I had to go to the makers of the video card and network interface) the problems went away.

And "freezing" is not common with XP -- something is wrong.

It sounds like you need to "Scorch the Earth"; that is, do a complete wipe of the drive and do a clean install of XP and all of the programs you use. You have enough RAM but your processor is a little on the slow side but it still shouldn't "freeze". I suspect that there is a whole lot of junk files/malware present, and that stuff needs to go away.

Is it that you can't download your program or it won't run on the machine you bought?

I can download the program fine but it seems part of it is missing.
Windows was just installed on this computer along with the hard drive
occupents of my old computer.

Was the hard drive formatted? and tell me how the "occupents" of your old computer were installed? That doesn't make sense unless you went thru and installed each program one by one. If you just copied the contents folder by folder or used some kind of software to migrate...........that could be your problem.........

Check this out. It did solve a problem for me in a few minutes. It may help other XP users. The text below was written and link provided by a software IT program developer.

It appears you have missing or corrupt Windows XP system command.com,
autoexec.nt and/or config.nt files -- to fix your system files click here
and then scroll down to file XP_FIX.EXE:
