Anyone want to volunteer any picks???

West Virginia Derby

Delightful Kiss - Owned by a 93 year owner/breeder with fragile health, trained by a 75 year old ex-jockey who once rode the truly great horse Forego (Kiss is the only horse he trains!!!) and an awesome roan color. How can we not all pull for this horse to win?

Slew's Tizzy- Anything named Slew pulls on my heart strings, I think I read that he is the favorite.

Sam P.- Named for a World War ll (I think) veteran owner/acquaintance who shares his birthday. Dam by Affirmed. Jockey said he was like riding a bicycle where you really have to keep him going. He was rated pretty high on Steve Davidowitz's list of top three year olds at 1 1/4 miles.

Dominican

Zanjero- I read that he was making a big move in the Derby and got cut off (?) I think he won his last one out.

Bwana Bull- Got scrapped up exiting the plane on arrival for the Derby, that must have been awful for him and his owners.

Song Of Navarone- Won the WinStar Derby last out.

Norjac

Dr. Googles Boogles

Moyer's Pond

I am going for Delightful Kiss, Zanjero and Sam P:)

Slew's Tizzy is tempting at 6/1 ML, but I'll wager the 2$ bettor's put him closer to 3/1 or 5/2. But 6/1 is a great price considering the race his coming out of and the race CP West ran in the Jim Dandy out of the Belmont.

Delightful Kiss - win place show

Slew's Tizzy- quits at 9furlongs?

Sam P.- never been a winner, but barn is hot and class here is right.

Dominican - LIKely flattens out 9f on dirt.

Zanjero- consistent , middle move has a good chance today , win place show

Bwana Bull- hard to back

Song Of Navarone- should have the lead at least until the stretch.

Norjac distance and class big question.

Dr. Googles Boogles can run in the stretch at this price use place, show

Moyer's Pond may have already peaked , use 3rd?

The two big middle move horses sure flattened out in the stretch.

Off topic, but if you were casting the devil in a movie, wouldn't Steve Assmusen be your first choice?

He is a little Vicent Price-ish.

i was right about Slews Tizzy and Dominican quiting, but it was too wierd a race to really make any money. The pace scratched. Bwana Bull is a horse you don't really know a whole lot about and he almost wins, and we still don't really know about that horse !

Really slow pace without Song of Navarone. Zanjero actually had the lead @ 6f in 1.13.24 , and the mile went in 139.90 with the winner finally finding the wire after a minute and fifty three seconds

i used Bwana Bull simply because he was taken right off the Derby Trail and had 4 months to regroup. Many times those 4 months are the maturity time that separates a 3 year old who is going to be ordinary versus a 3 year old who is going to be good at 4.

After today's sighting, I'm going to assume that Bwana Bull is going to be around a while to show us his stuff at 4.

Good capping.

Wish I had a good feeling for Bwana Bull going in.

Theres a saying I use too often - "in horse raceing, What you Don't know Does hurt you". To be honest I really didn't know where Bwana Bull fit here. Following my rule, when I am in that situation include or pass. I thought about tossing Dominican, Tizzy, and Norcal and then boxing the 5 others in an exacta, or even using the 1,6,9 as a key 1st 2nd 3rd for each level of the tri, with the 5 others filling the rest.
The problem is when I saw Song of Navarone scratch, I now had worries that the slow pace could possibly allow a horse like Dominican to make a middle move and hang on for third. I also thought there was a decent chance of it simply being Zanjero and Kiss all the way.
I still don't know if Bwana Bull (or Zanjero) is any good, but at least the replay was better looking than the chart. A few horses lined up to challenge and the final furlong or so wasn't too bad at all.
