Massoud falls in mid stretch on the lead in the opener at Saratoga...Ugly as he went under the rail...

Rider up and horse ran off. Hopefully both are okay.

Damn race bothered me so much I forgot I had the place horse to win/place. Massoud looked to be a winner just took a bad step. Ran off favoring the front right leg however.

My guess is blown sesamoids.

I hope so too - hate to see spills. You never get used them.
Bad way to open the meet.

Official chart reads: "broke down, fell" so it does not sound good.

I think JV should have took the rest of his mounts off. I wonder if he'll make it tomorrow.

The rumour around the track was that Massoud was ok, but I understand he has been euthanized.

I can understand the rumour as the horse got up and appeared (at least from a distance) to trot away, but according to the track vet, the injury to the leg was quite severe....

Paper reported a collision. I watched the tape several times in slow motion. I wager blown sesamoids. There was no contact, the entire fetlock hit the ground which is classical in that type injury upon which the horse can bear weight but they have a particular gait that tells the tale.

it was almost noticeable that something tragic was going to happen as the horse was running awkwardly the entire race... definitely not the way the spa wanted to kick off what sures to be a great meet

Bad Condylar fracture plus other assorted injuries was what I heard....

Not meaning to inflame here, but part of me believes, no doubt. If this horse were running in an awkward fashion due to anything amiss, this jockey would have pulled him up ....LONG before mid stretch where he broke down.

If this had been a dirt race, imagine the ensuing "NYRA should install polytrack" debate it would've triggered.

The way some of the dirt races were running Wednesday, I thought they already had installed Polytrack and just weren't telling anyone...

Probably will blame it on the dirt track workouts taking their toll. :bang:
