It's a good lesson in applying the basics of handicapping, but I don't necessarily agree with how jockeys and trainers are used, and how a layoff of 28+ days is cause for throwing out, even if they had a slow worktab as of recent (since some trainers prefer to send their horses out for a slow stroll before the return). However, I think it's a good introduction into handicapping for a beginner. It's too easy to get confused with the concepts of pace, trips, pedigree, etc. when you're new to the game, and Piesen's guide simplifies it.
