Smart jock. Talk about knowing the best part of the track.

Looked to me like the horse was wanting to run with the fence on its left side instead of the right. British/Irish runner?

If it was trying to run away or jump the fence, it would have, especially has it approached the hedge. It did not appear to me the jockey was concerned. Who is the jockey?

It'll be interesting if this shows up on a US TV broadcast.

Jockey Ryan Moore walked the track before the race and thought the outside had dried up mo betta' than the inside. Thus, the takeout.

Looks like he may have been right.

I see Aussie's do that all the time, particularly in sprints.

Reminds me of one of the chapters in Ainslie's Handicapper's Handbook where he talked about a time at Aqueduct in the 1960's when Jorge Velasquez was winning with one longshot after another by staying in the middle of the track because he had discovered that the rail was dead, and none of the other jockeys apparently picked up on it as quickly.

This has happened many times in Britain and Ireland. Dime a dozen.
The jockey did essentially what Bigmack said. He felt that the outer rail had firmer footing on a track that the tv host said was listed as Good to Soft. Give the rider kudos.

Thanks for the race Jog,

Ryan Moore at 23yo is already a champion in Europe and he’s only getting better. Baring injury we will be hearing about him for 20 years. The son of a very good trainer and his brother rode the jumps; the kid has been in the game since he was nursing.

Deep field as usual in the Eclipse and good to see failed sire / excellent runner George Washington back running well at a mile.

Thanks Bigmack for inside info. I saw this race first on OTB with Mark and MIke, who showed the race and then Mark goes "Are you kidding me?" with his mouth hanging open and MIke laughed.

a thing of beauty. It was a Grade 1 race and a horse named George Washington was entered. Was this the same 1 mile specialist out of England that ran in the BC 1 1/4 last year, if so where did he finish in the race?

Results here. (http://www.racingpost.co.uk/horses/result.sd?race_id=430469&r_date=2007-7-7)

Nobody can say for sure how much advantage Notnowcato enjoyed in coming up the stands' side on ground that was drying out fast, but it was a tactic that had been used all afternoon the previous day, and experienced course walkers - including Ryan Moore, who had a long look at the track with John Francome - were adamant that it was still quicker there. To his immense credit, Moore was determined to ride his own race on Notnowcato, whom he moved up into second on the outside starting the home turn, and then brought across to race next to the stands' side hedge, making his move with subtlety to begin with, so as not to bring the rest of the field with him. While most eyes were glued to the battle on the far side, Notnowcato made the best of his way home and scored decisively in the end, having been in front probably for more than a furlong.

Didn't Dickinson do this at Woodbine for one of Dahoss' BC wins, or was it his girlfriend in highheels ? ;)

So now can we ignore the "ground saved" comments from T-Graph and Ragozin?

The clerk of the course had even pinned up a notice in the weighing room before racing that the fastest ground was on the stands side ("hedge"). Only Ryan Moore had actually walked both sides of the track before the Eclipse.
The races after the Eclipse - they all raced stands side - might as well put a sheep up on some horses. Anyone notice how the Eclipse pacemaker horse was totally ignored?
