Here's the formula where n = number of horses to box.

n* (n-1)*(n-2)*(n-3) * base bet = TOTAL COST

to box 7 horses in a ten cent super it's

7*6*5*4*.10 = $84.

I believe the formula in math terms is nPr, that is the permutation of n items taken r at a time.

nPr = n!/(n-r)!

So, a 7 horse box $0.10 superfecta is 7P4*$0.1.

7P4 = 7!/(7-4)! * $0.1 = $84, just as PTC reported.

Good luck.

there is a simple way for any horizontal bet.

Take the field size and multiply by the number of places the wager requires

examples for a 10 horse filed boxing 5 horses

exacta 5X4= 20 combo's

Tri---5X4X3= 60 combo's

Super-5 X4X3X2= 120 combo's

Since you need 4 horses to complete the super, take the last 4 numbers of the horse you box and multiply. 6 horse box would be 6x5x4x3

No need for a calculator
