As the Sup Ct only takes about 80 cases a year out of some 8 or 9,000 petitions, the cases it does take are very important to the future of american law. The other day the Sup Ct. ruled that it is not Constitutionally protected free speech to hoist a banner at a school graduation saying: "Bong Hits for Jesus."

Normally one would have thought that suggesting that the lord supports smoking reefer is free speech, being as how one can say almost anything at a school function and get away with it but there were serious circuit court conflicts on this issue, with the conservative 5th Circuit ruling that: "Jesus loves toasted partiers" is not free, while the notoriously liberal 9th circuit ruled that "wake and bake with Jesus" is free speech.

Needless to say, although thousands of petitioners who face lengthy prison sentences will not have their petitions granted they can rest easier knowing that the limits of free speech and the relationship of Jesus to bong hits has been firmly established by this court.

Oh sure a few more mentally retarded people may get executed while the Supreme Court spends it's time researching the English Common law history of taking the Lord's name in relationship to bong hits and many hours of law clerk's time will be used in explaining the various theories of free speech and how they relate to the umbrella of freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, the rights of retards will not suffer.

After all how many mentally ill people on death row or without legal counsel can even contemplate free speech? Let alone explain the relationship of Magna Carta to the Right of Search and Seizure? Clearly the issue of Bong Hits for Jesus takes on a crucial role in the history of common law.

Hooray for the Supreme Court! Another shining beacon in AMerican Jurisprudence.
