1. Sunni and Shiites don't seem to get along.

2. It is primarily radical Muslims who are members of Al Qaeda. If other, more peaceful, Muslims don't agree with Al Qaeda, then what?

How did a small minority gain control of Russia, Germany and Mao Tse-Tung China? China a population then - estimated at 800 million people. Many of various dialects and disparate population.

Then nothing. The peaceful silent majority says and does nothing! In our own revolution, only a modest amount of a young nation agreed with GW. The vast majority were quite content paying taxes to the king.

To the militant radicals and Al Quada, any individuals or groups that they perceive to be against them, or cooperating in any way with those the oppose (militarily, economically, politically, etc.) are rationialized as either 'bad', 'fake', 'heretical' etc. 'Muslims' and no longer considered 'True' Muslims in their mind, thereby justifying, in their mind, physical attacks and destruction. ("No 'Real Muslim' would allow foreign military bases on Muslim soil. No 'Real Muslim' would cooperate with U.S. military personell, George Bush or any U.S. President, etc. etc. etc.) In other words, Al Qaeda has been "Your either with us, or against us" long before GWB used those words to try to rally a coalition of forces to fight Al Qaeda.
