The first horse I saw race was Coronado's Quest. I was heartbroken when he died serving a mare. He was the very first horse I saw race. It was on TV and I told my Mom, hey look at that horse, he's full of mischief. He was being led to the gait and he was playing with the pony horse, nipping and jumping around. I said "he's a character." Just sort of fell for him. And then when he got in the gait, it was like he grew up 20 years, just stood there nice, looking straight ahead and then won the race. The Travers I think. It's funny how you fall for certain horses ...

Native Diver was nearly black. He was promising early in his career but was headstrong. He settled down though and set several track records. When he won he would prance into the winners circle and look at the crowd. He beat Pretense at Hollywood in 1967 when Pretense was considered the best hcp horse in the west. He died of colic near the end of the Del Mar season.
