View Full Version : With A Little Help From My Friends

Since Belmont day is approaching rapidly I would like some help from my

friends on the board on Constructing the best tickets for the Belmont Stakes.

I won a contest where I will receive $ 500.00 to wager on the Belmont race.

There is no ceiling on the winning ( if any) and I was very disappointed

when I heard noted Philadelphia columnist Dick Jerardi say this is a poor

race to make money on. Any help would be appreciated :)

500 to show on Curlin?

Curlin is the probable winner but in a contest it will be hard to win with chalk. You need a price, maybe Rags To Riches or Hard Spun on top with some shots underneath.

500 to show on Curlin?

I may have misread what he said, this would be the safest way to cash out.

Let me rephrase this:

I already won 2nd place in the contest and my prize was $500 to bet on

the Belmont Anything I win I get to keep.

Do you only get to keep the profit, or do you also get to keep the $500?

does that include the $500?

I must bet $500 on the Belmont just as if it came out of my own pocket.

If I strike out and get $ 0 then 2nd place was worth just that.

I write down my bets they punch out the tickets and hold them until after

the race and I get whatever tickets are there to cash. I was going to bet

$2 to show on curlin and pocket the $ 498 but thats not allowed. I must

bet the entire $ 500 on the Belmont Stakes I can't use em for Pick 3's

or Pick 4's.

It sounds like you just want some cash. Why not throw out a couple chanceless horses and box the tri if you don't trust Curlin to run 1-2-3?

Then the $500 to show on Curlin would net you $525 at least...

Since you are effectively playing with "other's" money, and I'll probably get hammered for this idea, why not "buy the tri"? 8 horse field = 8x7x6= $336 or a 9 horse field = 9x7x7, if you "all bet" in this scenario, the wager becomes $504, (so leave out Digger in the 2nd or 3rd spot)and the price drops to $441. With your balance of $154 or $59- depending on field size - you are left with some decent exacta bets with Curlin in the 1 and/or 2 spot.

If Curlin and Hard Spun fail to hit the tote, the tri payout should be quite hefty !!

Just a thought !! ;)

Any help would be appreciated :) If I was trying to extract the maximum potential payout, I would dive into the deep end of the Superfecta pool. Now, this perspective is subject to change, but if I were placing the wager today I would start by putting 3 horses on top:

RAGS TO RICHES - HARD SPUN - CURLIN
with
R2R-HS-CURLIN-TIAGO+One that grabs your attention
with
ALL
with
R2R-HS-CURLIN-TIAGO+As many as you can

With what would be left over, based on the size of the field, I would either put it all on TIAGO'S nose or wheel/backwheel an overlooked contender with odds of 15-1 or higher in the exacta.

Rereading this post, my dengeneracy has never been stronger.

I'd like to piggyback on CJ's Dad's idea of buying a win.
If you were to dutch the entire field you'd be able to lock in $415.
Depending on the undercard, another option might be to invest some of your own money in pic3/4s or GrandSlam so going into the Belmont, you'd be covered with part of the field, leaving you free to bet the $500 on the uncovered part of the field.
In any event yours is a good problem to have. :)

doesn't this race have a history of high priced winners? I like Cj's Dad's Idea........in this scenario.

Other peoples money......... gotta love it. Whenever my dad an I were ahead on a day, I would tell him "let's have some fun with their money"

He would always retort with.......... "as soon as we win it, and it goes into our account, it's our money"

In honor of my Dad,,,,,,,,, who I lost five years ago today.....

I am with CJ's Dad!

Rereading this post, my dengeneracy has never been stronger. After seeing the draw, with only 7 entrants, I have to ask....Will Belmont Park even offer a superfecta?

With $500 to wager, I'd load up a superfecta ticket with lots of coverage on every line and hope some long money hits the board or the favorite misses the board completely.

Or you could try to dutch some win bets, if all you want is your $500 plus some profit.

So boys I would take any PMs if you don't want to share your bets with

the entire board. I am a mighty fine guy and if I use any of the structured

bets and make some serious cash I will gladly contribute to your favorite

charity. By the way I am taking a long look at Exotic Wagering by

Tom Walters ( Topcat on the board I think ) Any help from the old

Topcat would be appreciated :)

Seriously, I am thinking of just making a show wager on Curlin and taking

the $525 and running oh yes and also wishing and hoping.

I like CJ's Dad's play but wonder what you might collect with Curlin over RtR & any of the other runners? I would had to see you put up $500 and only collect a couple of hundred on the tri.

How about hedging a little bit and buy a $2 tri with RtR over Curlin over the field and put $490 on Curlin to show as CJ suggested.

Good luck,

JM :)

timtam,

I'd put half of it on a safe bet, like Curlin across the board or Place/Show, so you don't walk away with nothing. Put the rest on an Exacta box of your top 3 or 4 choices. Personally, I'd go with Curlin, Hard Spun, Rags to Riches and maybe C.P. West.

Good luck,
Bob

to $500 in a race and I actually am nervous about it.

Put the nickle on Hard Spun to win. Have some heart and go for the glory. At least you know you will have fun for a mile. That's what I would do. If you bet Curlin to show............... I can't post it.:) It's only five hundred, and it's free.

timtam,

I think someone also suggested a Rags/Curlin/All Trifecta too. Hope you cashed one of them.

I had to work so I still haven't seen the race.

I started with betting all the horses in a $1 box in the triple cost = $ 210

then i played a $1 superfecta ticket 37 with 1367 with 1,2,3,4,6,7 with
1,2,3,4,6,7 cost = $ 72

I put the remaining $ 218 on the 3 to show

If my math is correct I bet $ 500 (money from the contest ) and cashed $ 437.70

Thanks for all your help !!! :jump: :)
