Yep, guess I was in a Turfway state of mind when I wrote that. I stand corrected. The point was that I have no problem with the sounds of silence.

That being said, there are many fine announcers out there that truly enhance the sport.

I expect they had more trouble getting by the sensors than the censors. So, Vic, will you be taking off early again anytime soon? Talk about getting by the censors......

I enjoyed your interview on Lady Luck last night, and thank you for your enlightening explanation of the Thorograph numbers. I have always admired your confidence in them. You can almost convince a person that the price tag is worth it. I opened an account and will observe for awhile, but to be honest, if they are only half as good as you claim them to be, twice the price would be fair.

Nice to see you here.

I truly enjoy Vic's racecalling and hopefully will for a long time, but Larry Collmus does a terrific job in his own right. I remember him from years ago at Monmouth Park, and he's very smooth and accurate. I was dismayed when Vic got his email from Gulfstream Park, but was thrilled when Larry got the job at GP. Theres not 2 announcers Id rather listen to than Vic or Larry, tho Dave Rodman comes in a close 3rd, in my book. Great job by all guys. It almost seems an honor to have one of my horses in a race called by one of them.

I race mostly at Calder, so its like being at home to hear Bobby Neuman call my races. I hope that race announcers realize how much they add to our enjoyment of racing.

I can't let this thread go without mentioning my favorite announcer of all time the late Joe Hernandez. Not the most accurate but very colorful and he was a big reason that I grew to love this game. One of his last Big Cap callls....And here comes the big cat Cougar! He didn't miss a race at SA fom opening day until his death in (I think) 1972. He also called Del Mar.

With so many serious players now watching races / replays on computer monitors the race callers have taken on increased importants and along with it increased scrutiny.

Try and have the smallest video size option in the corner of your screen for Belmont and you need binoculars from three feet away to identify anything on the backstretch.

My first racing experience was in harness racing where the field was so orderly and the saddle clothes stood out like a beacon. I am just amazed more calls in thoroughbreds aren’t in error with the complexities involved.

One more point on listening to announcers at home.

Growing up listening to Bob Weems live (Not sure of the spelling) at Monmouth is very different than what we now get at home.

When Trevor, Vic and Durkin thunder a horse home it’s now pumped through 5 surround sound speakers and a sub-woofer. Certainly increases awareness when it’s the only voice in the room other than my lab asking to go out. ;)

Dan: You are certainly correct about the sudden announcer awareness! I've probably noticed it more in my last 5 years at Yavapai than the previous 19 yrs spent at Albuquerque combined, and as I said in an earlier thread, we sometimes drew up to 50K people there during The State Fair! As for the late Bob Weems, you spelled it correctly...Bob called Atlantic City for a short while, Monmouth and Turf Paradise in Phoenix, and his voice was featured on the radio announcing the winner "Troubador" (I think was the name of the big longshot winner) in the movie "Grifters". Bob was a great guy and a dear friend.....Boomer

That’s right Boom,

I had forgotten Bob was in The Grifters. (Excellent movie BTW) Bob was not overly flashy, but he had one of those voices that were made for race calling and had a great flow to his calls.

Larry C. is doing a terrific job, but Bob will always have honored place in the hearts of many fans of Monmouth Park.

Love Santa Rosa. Was there last Summer and the new turf course is impressive......When I was in school in the bay area I would get up there at least twice during their meet: go to the fair then go to the races....LOADS of fun. Wow that city has grown.

I think few people realize the amount of work and talent that is on display at a county fair. One guy there had won so many blue ribbons that he had made a coat out of them.

Couple of corrections...

ROBERT Geller (WO, formerly EMD) replaced Dan Loiselle
RICHARD Grunder (TAM)
Keith Jones now retired (not sure who the replacement is)
Jim Byers - one of the many Hollywood Park annoucers past currently at Lone Star Park
Matt Hook - also MVR

Also believe John Lies is now the Fonner announcer.

Not mentioned now with regular gigs

Matt Dinerman - Golden Gate (formerly EMD) -> replaces (in backwards order):
Frank Miramahdi, Alan Buchdahl, Angela Hermann, Michael Wrona

Chris Griffin - Sam Houston (formerly PLN)
Paul Espinosa - Penn National

And how 'bout a special honor for Don Alexander, the original "goof on the roof" who reportedly gave up the Hollywood Park job for Bandera Downs. It may be an apocryphal story but when he was at Hollywood he supposedly would circulate among the crowd and ask them how/if they liked the announcer. I believe his departure paved the way for Wrona's first regular gig in the US.

AWESOME POST!

Don "The Golden Throat" Alexander was a legend! When I first met him he was selling cassette tapes of race calls to the horsemen at Caliente. This is even before VHS. He's one of the reasons I decided to try to become a race caller. Figured if he could do it why not me? He's one of a myriad of people to call Hollywood Park over the years. There's a tough one. Name all the people to call at least one race at Hollywood Park!

I didn't know John Lies calls Fonner? Is that new this year?

Jim Beyers is one of my favorite people. He fills in at Oaklawn when I play the NHC. Not this year though because it's be changed to late August (COVID).

Chris Griffin called more that just PLN he called all the Fairs for many seasons.

I didn't know Paul Espinosa now calls Penn National? Is that new?

Michael Chamberlin was just announced this weekend as leaving Evangeline for Hoosier.

John Lies calls at Will Rogers Downs. I believe it's the "other" (not DRF) Steve Anderson who calls at Fonner.

I still remember when I started playing the ponies in 1983 some of the announcers.

Of course Marshall Cassidy at NYRA, “Bullet” Bob Meyer at Yonkers, Jack E. Lee at Roosevelt and Howard Oil at Monticello (the only announcer on this list who is still calling races.) Then on Tuesday’s NYC OTB would get the out-of-town tracks:

Ross Morton at Finger Lakes/Gulfstream (probably the most distinct voice of all the announcers)
Tom Durkin at Hialeah
Bob Savage at Calder (one of the most laid back announcers. Too bad I cannot find one of his calls on YouTube)
Dick Woolley at Bowie/Laurel/Pimlico
Jack Lamar at Keystone (Your horse ALWAYS got at least three or four calls and an announcer who would try to call dead heats lol).

I think John Bogar has been at Penn National since around 1983? I remember when it would be him and Fred Lipkin on “Racing Alive” at PN. It would be very informative listening to those two prior to each race.

Name all the people to call at least one race at Hollywood Park!.

I remember when Milo Perrins called there for a couple years in the late 80’s.

I remember when Milo Perrins called there for a couple years in the late 80’s.

The ones I know about are Hernandez, Moore, Henson, Buchdahl, Byers, Masters, Perrins, Alexander, Wrona, Denman, Kruytbosch, Kotulak, Stauffer.

But there's one or two who called a race or two. (John Tabb called a few when they brought Wrona up here.)

Plus, Terry Gilligan called quarterhorses and the immortal Roy Shudt and Robin Burns called trotters and pacers there.

Thanks, yeah, I think that's all correct. That's what I get for posting uncaffeinated and ;TLDR

Also, after a little poking around it appears as if:

John Bogar - Penn National

has been there about 30 years.

Paul Espinosa is at Charles Town rather than Penn National, right?

Michael Chamberlin was just announced this weekend as leaving Evangeline for Hoosier.

John Lies calls at Will Rogers Downs. I believe it's the "other" (not DRF) Steve Anderson who calls at Fonner.

Couple of corrections...

RICHARD Grunder (TAM)

Having Grunder's name wrong originally is really the ultimate in paying homage to his race calling style

Sad to hear that. Your position is often criticized and rarely praised. All the best to you for whatever's next!

That stinks, you have always done a very good job. I'll miss your calls. I watch and bet often as many horses show up here at Remington plus I like the all dirt racing as a figure maker

Disheartening news, Jimmy. You started at Prairie Meadows the same year I started at Mountaineer. I hope you can stay in the game elsewhere and leave on your terms.

Penn was my home track. John made his picks every day in the Patriot news for about 20 years. Good handicapper, accurate race caller, even if he's "rather" monotone.

This guy Allen at Canterbury is the most entertaining caller I’ve ever heard.
His stretch call in R6 tonight was great….
“Here comes JP Warrior coming out to plaaaaay-aaayy”

:lol:Even though it was a bit campy, the "Warriors" has always stuck with me, in a good way.

I remember Shaq given a speech when the Lakers 3-peated, ending it by saying, "Can You Dig It"...Classic.
