These are my Quirin style pace/speed figures for the Derby Preps, pace of race. Pace figure is two points per length, speed fig is one point per length.

Par is 111 fo rthe Derby.

My (Quirn's) target is 107-111 for an acceptable figure by a horse.
To get a hors'e figs, subtract 1 point for each beaten length at the pace call and final call.

In a race 110-110, a hore beaten 2 and 1 would get 108-109.

The great thing about looking at these races by energy distribution is that it tells you the ones that cannot get the added distance. If their percent median rises with the distance increase, they are telling you they won't get the extra distance. No Biz is a good example and I really like this colt. The numbers don't. Same with Stormello and Scat Daddy......All good ones but maybe not at 10 furlongs.

I've really begun to pay more attention to energy distribution in this race and it seems like the horses that have a good distribution and CJ Pace figs are the following:

Curlin
Hard Spun
Circular Quay
Street Sense

So many of the very good ones this year come from so so far back....If it keeps raining, it might prompt a re-evaluation of this whole race as moisture moves up the speedballs an awful lot.
