They just announced that a 13 year old is running tomorrow at Lone Star. Anyone familiar with the horse?

It seems old for a racer, but as far as riding horses go, he'd still be considered a young one! :) Does anyone know the maximum racing age for thoroughbreds? I thought I remember hearing it was 15.

I was just reading that new book about Suffolk Downs and the author is writing about an 11 year old gelding named Saratoga Ridge who was still racing.

Proven Cure has a very attractive quality about him - he likes to win.

We had a 13 year old win last year here at River Downs, Carla Sparkles. I'll never forget talking to the jocks agent and telling him she was 13 when he put the entry in, his response "oh your kidding me" and sure enough she won.

I remember a 13 year old winning when I was an agent at Turf Paradise many years ago. The name of the horse was Hyali Talk. He was like 3-3 at age 12, too!

It used to be 12, at least in CA. When Frankel was still racing claimers he claimed a 12yo named Strong Award who had won many races. When asked why he replied that the old horse had raced enough. He said he planned to get him a bar mitzvah and give him back to his breeder in Washington.

They can continue racing as long as they have won in the previous year in many jurisdictions. I believe this rule begins with their 13th year.

Sagely won his 50th race out of slightly over 100 at the age of 15 at Finger Lakes years ago. Only reason he retired was he could not race past 15. I believe SIlver Fir, also FL was winning at 15 also.

Lake's late Stormy Do won his last race in 2006 at 13 years old.

In Texas, horses can't race after the age of 9 unless they have won a race the year before. Proven Cure won a small stakes race last year.

Proven Cure went off as the 9/5 favorite and lost by a nose.

Very old horses can be some of the best bets out there. A lot of these old timers were once very good runners but age has slowed them down. It does seem however, that they reach a point where they run a very consistent speed which is usually good enough to beat the cheapest platers, especially at the minor tracks and there is almost no fear of such old horses being claimed.

Back in the fifties there was an old claimer named Appease Not that ran at the old Fair Grounds. He was such a crowd pleaser that when he died he was buried in the infield where Black Gold is buried.

Just looked up hi record: 1946 foal, raced until 1960, won in 1959. 42 wins from 314 starts That is ireally something. Won a total of $122,802.
