On this date in 1973, in his second start as a 3-year-old, Secretariat won the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct as the 1-10 favorite.

On this date in 1979 Steve Cauthen made his first race in England a winning one, with Marquee Universal (IRE) at Salisbury.

Brings back memories. After Sports Illustrated named Cauthen their 1977 Sportsman of the Year (and who else could it have been?), I recall the outraged letters they received from people asking how anyone could call a jockey a sportsman or an athlete. I wish he could have stayed in the U.S. a while longer. But at least he got to ride Affirmed to the Triple Crown.

Probably the same people who complain about the swimsuit issue every year.
