hi folks,

I know of one major race that was won by a one legged jockey.

A friend has a saying '..show me a GOOD bet on a One legged jockey..' and yes, I will bet it and NOT ask any questoins!!

WELL, only one sample can not define a GOOD bet.

does anyone have other samples?

I thoroughly do not understand where this is going, but it did bring to mind a winner's circle photo that I once saw. The horse, jockey and trainer all had one functioning eye.

There used to be a grass runner here in SoCal ten years ago that had one eye. She won a few. She was a grey and damned if I can remember her name. I believe they put her down about3 or 4 years ago.

There is indeed a one-legged jockey who has won many races! His name is Jimmy Jordan, he wears a prosthetic leg while riding, and was even aboard Belle's Good Cide (Funny Cide's Momma) when I called her breaking her maiden several years ago at Fair Meadows. I assume he's still riding but even if he isn't, he won over 1000 races I would guess......

I don't know about this. I googled Jimmy Jordan and nothing came up about the jockey, but Jim Jordan who played Fibber McGee came up lots. Is this an April 4th joke?

the Red Pollard on Seabiscuit is the story that started this idea.
I was never sure if there were others like Pollard.
now, I know.

I looked for JIMMY (as it was spelled in the original post here) not JIMMIE.

Thanks for the correction.

Does anyone know of any way getting in touch with Jimmy Jordan? I'm interested in writing a screenplay based on his riding. Any info. you have would be greatly appreciated!

I once had a one-eyed cat.
Never knew if he was coming or going.

The first Eclipse award I won was for a radio piece about jockey Jim Jordan. He rode with a prosthetic leg. It aired on KKAR in Omaha Neb. in 1995. He was riding at Atokad Park and other tracks around that area. I've since lost track of his career.

For some reason race tracks names were places named backwards in those days. Atokad was Dakota. If memory serves it was in South Sioux City, South Dakota. Of course Ak-Sar-Ben was Nebraska in reverse. I sadly called the last race run there. Truly a great great place in it's heydey.

Agree about Aksarben. Unfortunately, the land became so valuable that the state of Nebraska and the city of Omaha's politicians finally succeded in killing the track and taking control of the property. All greed and politically motivated.

Actually the bible banging conservative politicians completely dropped the ball by allowing Iowa to get the jump on them with slots. When the machines came in at a greyhound track 7 miles away just across the border in Council Bluffs. Ak-Sar-Ben's fate was sealed and the once great track quickly died.

And it looks like it's in Nebraska, not Dakota, though it's right at the point where Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota all meet.

Come to think of it you're right. It was South Souix City. But Nebraska. Good catch.

If you ever want to re-live the memories of the once great Aksarben race course. This is an excellent website. Having lived my whole life in Nebraska..I can still here the crowds when I drive by the old site.

I got so excited to see this website. I signed the guestbook just today only to find when browsing through it I had already signed it almost 5 years ago:blush:
