Horse's color as registered is based upon the color as a baby. That designation is what is on the certificate sent to the Jockey Club.
I recall that Ack Ack was almost black but his designation was brown. Spectacular Bid was a darker gray and when I visited him at Claiborne he was almost white as many grays become over time.

thank you 46, I did not know that the baby color is their color for life.
does anyone know if a horse's color can change from (--something--) to some form of Grey, ie, Roan, Grey, or White?

I get files from TSNHorse.com that have that information. I'm pretty sure most Past Performance files would have color. I got files from another source in the past that also had color.
