1 The Best straight bets for your money are win and show

2) If betting to win, stick with horses that give you odds of 5-1 or better; if betting to place, stick with odds of 5-1 or less

3) If you really like a horse, go with your instincts and make a play on it. Don't bet horses you really don't like

4) Avoid horses moving up in class. It's one thing to beat up on lesser horses, quite another, to beat up on better ones

5) Your best bets are ofter with horses that have some winning background, not with ones that are chronic losers and have never tasted the finish line first.

"I wouldn't flip you for fifty cents. I don't have any gamble in me. If I don't have the best of it, I will not bet."

"Luck is a subject for the thick-headed suckers."

"A real professional gambler is not gambling because if he takes the best of it on a lot of action that fits his bankroll, he will win every single year of his life but not every month."
