On this date in 1940 New York legalized parimutuel wagering and outlawed book-makers at the state's racetracks.

On this date in 1998 the NTRA officially launched operations with the opening of its office in Lexington, Ky.

Well this fact teaches me a lot about why racing in the US is so disjointed. I would have expected that a national organization for this industry would be in its second century of existence by now, not its first decade.

Actually, it makes perfect sense that the NTRA opened on April Fool's Day.....

It's funny how everyone is so quick to jump on NYRA, Magna, Equibase, DRF, etc to pin racing and handicapper's ills, yet hardly ANYBODY ever points a finger at the NTRA, which, I thought, was created to not only promote, but also to organize the sport on a national level. Have they done their job?
