An organization called "Habitat for Horses" (HfH) released a story March 19th about Risky Decision, an Illinois-bred granddaughter of Seattle Slew. It's a good story, but some elememts don't seem quite right. In brief:

- The Missouri-based original owner bought her as a "pleasure horse" and only later decided to race her.
- The horse was claimed in 1996. The owner hadn't expected the claim because of a recent gate injury.
- The original owner tried to buy her back, but the new owner "wouldn't budge."
- The original owner "lost track" of the horse.
- Over the years the Jockey Club would not release any information about the horse, citing "privacy issues."
- In autumn of 2006 the Jockey Club said Risky Decision was no longer in their records.
- In February '06, the emaciated horse had been rescued by HfH in Texas.
- The original owner spotted a picture of the horse on the HfH website in January '07.
- The horse's identity was confirmed by a leg scar (presumably from the gate accident).
- The original owner adopted the horse back.

Buying a Slew granddaughter for pleasure; not expecting a claim, even after an injury; the new owner's recalcitrance; the Jockey Club's relutance. Does all this add up?

Has anyone here at PA heard of the horse? Did she ever race after the claim? Don't thoroughbreds have traceable tatoos?

I like the story, and strongly support HfH's rescue objective, but this one seems a bit out there. Thanks very much.
