Portion of an article by Tom Keyeser at the Time Union

"Work means race, and that won't happen for at least a year and a half. By then Papa Charlie will have cost his owner about $60,000, assuming the horse doesnt suffer a serious injury or illness. That includes Papa Charlie's care as well as care for hiis mother, Demaloot's Girl to stallion Desert Warrior.

Charlie Mandracchia who owns Papa Charlie, realizes that he's unlikely to ever recoup the expenses. He knows the statistics are against him.

Of the 34,350 thoroughbreds born last year in the United States, 34 percent will never make it to the races. Fifty-six percent will never win a race. And during it's entire racing career, the average thoroughbred will earn less than $30,000. Thats about what it cost to keep a horse in training for just one year. (end)

I wish the article would have said what the average length of time a thorouhghbred races, because most are done prior to age 4.
The average Tbred also brings in over $50,000 in takeout.
Graded stakes yearly purses are ere close to $500 million.
