Could ther be a curse on the Preakness Stakes?

2 years ago Afleet Alex nearly took a spill that could have been deadly.
Last Year Barbaro... Well, :( .

Is this at least a possibility?

The only curse on the Preakness Stakes is that it has to be held at Pimlico.

There have been some really good ones: Afleet Alex getting up off his knees, Sec winning on the clubhouse turn, EasyGoer/SS, Silver Charm, Canonero's surprise move to the front.....even the hooded wonder upsetting a Triple Crown was interesting.

I'm sure you could say there is a curse of the Belmont or there is a curse of the Derby.

Probably true - two recent Belmont ones I can think of right now:

Charismatic - 3rd and vanned off
War Emblem - stumbled start

Oh is that Gate Dancer in the hood?? Wasnt there a horse in the San Felipe wearing a hood?

Other Belmont bads: Last race for Count Fleet, Tim Tam, Smarty.

Hansel never won another race. Prairie Bayou suffered a fatal breakdown there. Did Sarava ever win again???

Did Sarava ever race again, for that matter?

Tim Tam that race still brings a tear to my eye :(

Yeah, what happened there? I was not yet born, but if you were there or watched it, I'd like to hear your impressions. Beaten by 6 lengths in the Belmont, he was found to have shattered sesamoids, Hunter says he ran most of the stretch run on three good legs. Sounds like Charismatics race. He did finish 5 1/2 ahead of the third place finisher...

Yup, raced a bunch more times after the Belmont, but never won again.

Well we all know how that goes. Where is he now, does anyone know? I've taken up a personal hobby of tracking down retired racers to find out where they're living now (or how long they've been dead.) Thanks.

Looks to me Genuine Risk, '80 winner who is retired to Newstead farm in Virgina as of March 2007 is the oldest living Derby winner. Winning Colors is still around and in foal this year to Mr. Greely.

wow, 30 years old more or less. Are there any others between Genuine Risk and Winning Colors? None offhand but..

STrike the Gold appears to still be at Turkish National Stud.

I looked at the pedigree site later and saw that Winning Colors is in foal, I think she's lost some before, and it looks like she hasnt had one in a few years. Some of them have been runners. So hope it goes well.

The only curse that remains in history on the date of this posting is the Ides Of March, the day that Ceasar, the dictator of modern day Italy, was assinated by his lifelong buddies. Starting a new curse on Pimlico, just because of the neighborhood that is in, is more dishonest; since it's existance it has been the site for many positive historical events than to say that today it is cursed.

Winning colors isn't next oldest, it's Alysheba. Next oldest in the US is Winning Colors, who is at Gainesway, I believe.

The Preakness is a tough race to win as speedballs have a great advantage in the midst of two contests that require overt stamina.

It seems to get passed over by media hype. "The Horse that won the Derby" Or "Ooh. He knocked off a triple crown hopeful in the Belmont." Every casual fan forgets the winners of the race in the middle, if that horse then loses the third race.

Like, most recently, Red Bullet. huge upset over Fusaichi Pegasus and now no one hears a thing about him. Of course, his career after that race didn't exactly take off, but still...

That would appear to be the case (speed balls). However Preakness seems more reasonable as a betting proposition, for instance hasnt the all/all exacta shown a profit the last five years? I usually find picking this race a bit more interesting, while derby often seems a crapshoot. But I like the derby excitement and build up much more, I suppose.

From what I read Red Bullet sounds like he was a real monster for a short period. I cannot really recall his Preakness although it is covered somewhat by that book on the 2000 season. Did he get wiped out in the derby, or just didnt run in it?

Racer98

Bullet didn't run in the Derby. He finished second to Pegasus in the Wood Memorial, and his owner decided to skip the Roses. The Preakness was only his fifth start.

However, older stars Anees and War Chant ran in the 2000 Derby, finishing 13th and 9th respectively.

yeah, I just saw a clip on that Wood. What was the story there? The old inside bias? It looked like Bullet was trying hard to catch him at the end. There have been a few good seconds in that race huh? ANd no Jazil is not one of them.
