After doing a search at pace advantage.com, I found an excellent discussion on this topic in April 2002. The takeout and breakage discussion back then was pretty thorough, so I don't expect a big rehash on this matter. I could see some of the points, pro and con on this topic and whether it mattered or not.

I found a couple of links on track takeouts and have listed them below for anyone who's interested (some of the takeouts missing in one link, are found in the other link):

http://www.handicapping.com/tracks/

http://www.trpublishing.com/p0001143.htm

Does anyone know of any links where I can examine whether a track has nickel breakage or dime breakage?
Would appeciate that...thanks.

Oops! I slipped up on the spelling of the word "takeout" in the Post subject. Oh well, we all make mistakes at times.

To the nickel in New York State and in Canada. That is about it as far as I know. Since I play Woodbine/Mohawk Harness alot I love that extra change. LOL

Thanks a million for the info:

I know what you mean about collecting that extra change. Better in our pockets, than in the racetracks' pockets. On the Northlands Park/Stampede Park circuit, I believe they have a straight bet takeout, that's lower than Hastings Park. I'll have to check out what the percentage is.

I envy you for making money on the Woodbine/Mohawk harness circuit. I can't figure that circuit out, so I quit betting there. For harness racing, I have to play the Northlands Park/Stampede Park circuit, The Meadows, Dover Downs, or the Meadowlands (when the Big M starts) to make a profit.

It's really a misnomer to say that New York has nickle breakage. Like the scan method in dealing with wagers that have four or more legs, the NY breakage law is little known. In essence, only winning two dollar payoffs that are less than $12 are subject to "nickle" breakage. On some higher winning bets in New York the breakage is a whopping "half dollar!"
Sec.228 of the NY statute (available at www.racing.state.ny.us) .....breaks are hereby defined as the odd cents over any multiple of ten, or for exotic bets over any multiple of fifty, or for super exotic bets, over any multiple of one hundred, calculated on the basis of one dollar, otherwise payable to a patron provided, however, that effective after October fifteenth, nineteen hundred ninety-four breaks are hereby defined as the odd cents over any multiple of five for payoffs greater than one dollar five cents but less than five dollars, over any multiple of ten for payoffs greater than five dollars but less than twenty-five dollars, over any multiple of twenty-five for payoffs greater than twenty-five dollars but less than two hundred fifty dollars, or over any multiple of fifty for payoffs over two hundred fifty dollars. that are less than $12

My guess is that it must be a lawyer who wrote that gobbledygook on breakage for the ny racing state.

Changing the subject slightly, I noticed awhile ago that at the Turf Paradise website, the people who run Turf Paradise were complaining about the competition from nearby casinos. So I e-mailed them and told them I might have a little sympathy for their cause, if they would lower their takeout on straight bets (last time I checked it was 20%, one of the highest, if not the highest amongst U.S. tracks). I even pointed out to them, that some other tracks have lowered their takeout with great success. The reply from the folks who run Turf Paradise, was that they weren't sure that lowering the takeout would work there. Seems like they didn't want to take that risk.

The management at Turf Paradise just doesn't get it. A lower takeout gives the bettor, a bigger bang for their buck!. A lower takeout introduced by some other progressive-thinking tracks, has been a win-win situation for them and their patrons...i.e. there is firstly, a higher betting handle. That in turn produces revenues, that more than offset the reduction in the takeout. Plus, higher payoffs are returned to the bettors.

In the meantime, it appears Turf Paradise continues their poverty-conscious ways and haven't lowered their takeout on straight bets, that I'm aware of.

If Turf Paradise lowered their takeout to 12%, I'd move to Arizona in a flash.......it would be the best gamble in the US.
Of course.....on the other hand......the pools would increase so much that there would be no stability anymore......ie: horses in the gate at 3/1 cross the wire at 8/5......<sigh>

Lowest takeout=sharpest bettors,

any self respecting pro with any sort of accurate records will find this obvious. it is a virtual wash.
