This might be a dumb question.... but how does a fire break out in "the men's restroom"?

I also found it kind of odd that they recieved the alarm at 3 MTP and waited until after the race to evacuate...

Correctamoondo. Motley Crue covered the original by Brownsville Station

They may now be under investigation as the lyrics indicate they met in the boys room on the 2nd floor

Sittin in the classroom thinkin its a drag
Listening to the teacher rap--just aint my bag
When two bells ring you know its my cue
Gonna meet the boys on floor number 2

From article:

Fire department officials received the alarm at 3:05 p.m., or three minutes before post time of the sixth race, according to Fifth District Chief Jaime Lampard. Shortly after the sixth race, the building was evacuated.

Chart and replay videos only show 5 races, and the alarm came before the 6th. So I'm not aware of them actually running the 6th race.

Just speculating, but it is easy to have a fire in a garbage can. Only takes a lit cigarette, and an angry/drunk/both patron, or someone putting paper tickets into a dual use trash/cigarette ash try garbage can. I caught a couple of those at Arlington back when smoking was still allowed in some sections, and altered the maintenance crews. Seen/heard of it happen a couple of times in the work world as well, usually a missed, but still warm enough cigarette butt got mixed in with regular trash by accident.

Wonder if some drunken patron goofed/(sore loser?) while partying hard on Fat Tuesday.

Okey doke. Sorry, I wasn't following the card. This tells me they chart callers and video people had to evacuate after the race without updating the data/work. I wasn't following the card, and FG isn't on my online betting provider.

Folks might want to inspect any results data files to be sure the 6th race is included.

Now I'm speculating that the alarm came, but then they had to evaluate the size and scope of the fire, and what to do. Have to use a bit of care before telling a good sized crowd of people to leave a building to avoid things like panics.

We've gotten a lot of false fire alarms at AP - either kids/idiots pulling/bumping the levers, or sensitive sensors (track burned down once, so fire precautions much more strigent now). I saw a fire in a work/catering area on the third floor back in the late '90s, and with it being contained, there was no evacuation - but I sure kept my eye on it. (Nowdays I'm smarter/more cautious and at least move to the other side of the building if not outside.)

Oh man! I'm starting to think about all the on-track mutual clerks and the cash at the windows, the vault, tote room, etc. Having to bag up and go. I would think the tellers would normally have security escorting them when transporting cash. Lots of issues for them to deal with. Hopefully they have good plans and executed them well. (I avoid the obvious joke-the folks down in N.O. have suffered enough.)

I just checked the chart (Instant chart - Bris) It shows the 6th race canceled with the results underneath. Oops   - Possibly the chart callers booked - accurate charts might not have been their highest priority.

Normally Equibase the charts are up about 20 minutes after the finish. Yeah, either they got out, or knew they didn't have enough time to stay to do all that updating.

Interesting.

Gonna meet the boys on floor number 2Saw Brownville Station as opening act twice in 70s. Cub Koda was heck of a showman. One of the first acts to really get audience involved in show.

My friends and I thought clear (I assume acylic body) guitar was extremely cool (or kool)...

There is always an idiot who thinks his butt is out............and puts it in a trash can...............Glad fire wasn't yesterday I was on 4th floor!

Louisiana law that took effect January 1 prohibits indoor smoking at this facility. So, this was real Darwin Award nominee performance by some jack-donkey idiot.

Fortunately, it appears that no one was injured. Don't know any more details. I feel badly for fans enjoying Mardi Gras at historic track.

Steve's link that he providessays:
"Racing at Fair Grounds was halted midway through Tuesday's card because of a small fire in a bathroom. The blaze in the end was contained to the bathroom, located on the east side of the track's second floor, but Fair Grounds was evacuated and racing canceled as a precautionary measure before New Orleans fire department personnel extinguished the fire."

"They didn't know if it was spreading horizontally or vertically, so the decision was made to evacuate," said Fair Grounds' president, Randy Soth.

I had a heavy bet pre- placed on Fair Grounds 8 th at an O.T.B.
I went elsewhere. Later, when I went to cash my tickets, I was refunded.
The decision to cancel was a "no-brainer." It had to be done.
The risk of but even one human life vs. my heavy bet. Give your head a shake.
Smart move on the part of Fair Grounds.
I applaud it.

Smart, bordering on brilliant, given the fact that the FD told them to evacuate the entire building.
