I use the free AVG virus software.
I keep getting junk emails with an attachment called Postcard.exe.
Of course, I don't run the exe attachment. I just delete the email.
However, I get this message in the bottom of the email when I view the email:
No virus found in this incoming message.
Checked by AVG Free Edition.
Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.17.21/665 - Release Date: 2/2/2007 11:39 PM
Does anyone know what is Postcard.exe?

I think it is a worm -- installs a bot so your computer can be remotely controlled. So, don't run it...

Thanks.
So AVG protects against viruses, but not worm bots?
Guess I got what I paid for.

Make sure your e-mail scan within AVG is working. Noticed mine got shut off, with out me doing anything. Didn't get infected, but thought I would pass it on.

Get Avast -- also free, and nicer than AVG...

I have to turn mine OFF or else it tqkes - literally - a half an hour to get mail downloaded.
I actually now un-install AVG everytime I use it - then re-install once a week and run it. Otherwise, the whole computer slows down to a total crawl - up to three minutes to open Word or Excel.
Tom, this is highly irregular. What version are you running?
Latest version 7.5.432 here (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5).
Did you by any chance overwrite an older version to a newer version?
Did you properly delete an older version and clean your registry before you upgraded to a newer version?
Perplexing – I'll ask around.
At the very least, I believe you can turn off email and MS office full time monitoring.

s,
Yes, basically, anti-virus protects against viruses only. Some like Kapspersky AV protect against spyware as well as AV. Viruses are down to only about 1% of computer infections, so you could also install free AVG Anti-Spyware which has been developed by Ewido.

The Comodo free firewall is also good -- much more complete than the other free freewalls.

They also have a free anti-virus now, but I haven't tried it...

what programs do I have to stop running in order to run AVAST? I am currently running AVG, windows defender, spybot and Adaware. I think.

I run Avast (with a few of the modules turned off -- like Outlook, Messenger, and P2P protection cause I never use any of those things) with the Comodo firewall. And every once in a while I run adware & another spyware checker. I'm also behind a router with a hardware firewall (everybody should have a router).
I've never ever had a virus on any computer -- I don't know why people seem to have so much trouble. Just a few simple precautions and you're unlikely to have anything happen.
