In another aspect of Barbaro's legacy, racing enthusiasts and fans of the colt are making donations to equine retirement programs in his memory.

Barbaro's brilliant racing career and eight-month fight for survival won't soon be forgotten. There's already great interest in just how good Barbaro's kid brother can be. Barbaro funds, aimed at equine research and preventing deadly laminitis, have been started, and there's talk of a museum.

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has established the NTRA Charities-Barbaro Memorial Fund, a national fundraising program for equine health and safety research created in the name of the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner, who was euthanized on January 29.
