Barbaro Showed Best, Worst in Horse Racing

By Andrew Beyer (http://projects.washingtonpost.com/staff/email/andrew+beyer/)

Unlike movies and books about the sport, real-life horse racing does not often produce stories with happy and satisfying endings. Modern thoroughbreds are so fragile that people who spend their lives around the animals always brace themselves for the worst outcomes.

Rest of the story... (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/29/AR2007012901094.html)

Andy wrote an article capturing the true essence of this
valiant horse and the devoted cast of owners and medical staff
who kept him alive for over eight months.

God bless this horse and his owners for exhibiting incredible strength
during during these months.

Hopefully, track owners and regulatory offices will seize this opportunity to
insure a safer environment for these athletes who lay their life on the line
each day the gate opens.

They stayed true to their word about not having him in too much pain.

I'm going to read the Beyer article because no one writes horses like Andy. In todays NY Times there's great coverage of Barbaro, so read that if you can.

Tonight, on Larry King (CNN) they will be having numerous gusets close to Barbaro - owners, vets, etc.
