Folks, the much-rumored upgrade of Joe Mainardi's excellent and venerable program, HorseSense, should be in a few hands even as we speak.
Anyone have any insights or comments about Joe's Masterwork? Any significant changes in the program?
Appreciate any input, as not a word was mentioned about the Del Mar Seminar- except that the picks were quite strong.
All the best,

I know someone who is using the DOS 5.0 version of the program, bought the Horsesence for Windows version and doesn't see that much difference, exept it is easier to use. The site at
www.ponypicker.com claims 2 winners out of 9 at Del Mar and the results "coming soon".

Hello Jaguar,
I have been using HSV6 for a while now and I must say that it is very strong (but selective) software. What I like best about it is it keeps you off of races that traditionally you don't have a very good chance of winning. Although on BC Day the picks were sort of chalky, using the TSN data file out of 6 recommended playable races it had 4 winners on TOP. It also had a few decent exactas and a Trifecta in the TOP 3 on that same card. Honestly, I can speak of first hand having many days when using H$V6 when there has only been say two or three recommended playable races and I have crushed each of them and in tracking the others I generally found that the results would have been abysmal, so, yes, it is a very nice program.
This past Gulfstream Meet early in the spring using only recommended plays either good or marginal, I experienced about three weeks where I didn't have a losing day using this program. It is a very well written software.
As far as the Upgrades go, I believe (although I could be wrong) that the most recent upgrades only affected some obscure track that I had never before heard of nor had the pleasure of playing.
In my opinion, this program is worth every penney that I paid for it and far more. If you check his site at www.ponypicker.com he often announces specials for H$V6! The program in its windows version is very easy to navigate and use. It also allows you to either handicap fully automated or to be totally involved throughout the entire handicapping process.
All the BEST!

Vinnie,
thanks for sharing the good news about HS, I had an earlier version and always liked Joe Mainardi's highly selective- and shrewd- approach to handicapping.
This is a spot game, as you indicated, and I wasted years and alot of hard-earned cash trying to beat impossible races, before I finally smartened up a bit and got ahold of Multi-Strats, which told me when to wade in, and when to go to the snack bar, instead.
If only I had gone to the coffee stand- instead of the mutuel window- when the claiming races came up, I'd be wealthy today.
Now I gotta try and get that money back, betting 6-5 shots, so it might take a while. Sure is fun trying, though.
Thanks to your thorough comments, I'll be ordering HS shortly.
All the best,
Jaguar

Jaguar,
I am sorry that it took me a little bit to get back to you. I worked a couple of sixteen hour shifts over the last two days, so, I haven't had much of a chance to get on the net of late! :>(
You won't be disappointed with H$. I love the program. I like it because it is a very selective program. It helps you to concentrate more closely on those plays which may be your BEST ones on a particular card. Once you get it and start using it, please give me a holler when you get the chance and let me know what you find to be the most effective way you are using it! We can exchange notes! :D

Jaguar,
I see that you live in the Hamden, CT area. I may be relocating to the Danbury area very soon. I should be hearing something early this next week. Approximately how far is Danbury from your area?
My wife is from Mass. and we are trying to get back closer to her family whom all live in Massachusetts.
Take Good Care,

Vinnie, welcome to the Nutmeg State.- During the American Revolution, Connecticut was referred to as "The Provision State", due to the variety and quantity of supplies CT contributed to the Revolutionary cause.
We may be a small State, but we have beautiful, rolling hills, a sophisticated economy, great schools, colleges, and Universities.
We have lots of Rivers, and an attractive Atlantic coastline. All-in-all, a great State to live in and also to raise a family in. Spend a Fall(September-November) with us and you'll see the spectacular red, gold, and green foliage as you motor along our winding country roads- and you'll know why we Connecticut Yankees don't care to leave. In fact, my forbears came here in 1638- and they haven't been able to get rid of us yet!
Hey, we are privileged to have His Eminence, Joe Mainardi himself, Prince of Handicappers, putting in an appearance on our Board. That's certainly a recommendation for PA- having that level of handicapper/computer scientist visit us.
By the way, Danbury is probably 40 or so miles from New Haven, and the town is located in one of the prettiest parts of Connecticut- . Nice old Colonial towns and counties up there, such as the towns of Kent, Sharon, Washington, -and Litchfield county itself, which is mostly beautiful woods.
You and your family will enjoy life, for sure, in Connecticut.
If you like Pizza, visit New Haven. We've got Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana, Sally's down the street from Pepe's, and across town, another renowned pizzeria, "Modern Pizzeria". Summing up, we have a bunch of old-fashioned brick ovens turning out pies baked with fresh, crushed tomatos, that are so delicious that grown men have been known to weep after feasting in these 3 restaurants, knowing that no matter where they move to in this country, they will never again taste pizza this good.
If I were to suffer the misfortune of being sentenced to be shot by a firing squad at dawn, my last request would be for a tomato, bacon, mozzarella pizza from Sally's. A little taste of Heaven.
All the best,
Jaguar

To Jaguar: My wife saw your posting and wanted to know when I became a Prince... after all, she's been kissing this middle-aged frog for a long time.
Of general interest: Since it's late on a Saturday night -- my normal time to work on Hor$ense -- I'm busy making web site updates. I have no doubt that everything will be updated by sunrise on the East Coast. Nothing Earth-shattering, just stuff that has been sitting in a pile in the corner of the home-office since Labor Day weekend!!!

Jaguar,
Thanks for the Awesome post. I appreciate all of the information, especially on the Pizza places, etc.. I have printed out your message for future reference, believe me. You know, when I was living in Massachusetts, the very best pie that I had ever eaten had to come from a place called "Sal's Pizza" in Salem, New Hampshire which is just down the street from Rockingham Park. WOW!! What a pie they create at that place. Even if we weren't going to the races and we were just taking a nice drive, we would go there just for the AWESOME Pizza. The style is supposed to be like North End of Boston pizza.
Are there any sports book locations out there near the Danbury area, or near New Haven that you know of? Jaguar, the way that you talk about that place Sally's, hey, upon my arrival I will be there for one of their famous Pies let me tell ya what.
Thanks for all of the super information. Maybe we can hook up sometime down the road, or hit the Foxwoods sportsbook or something someday in the future?
ALL THE BEST!

Vinnie, not to worry. Danbury has an excellent racebook. Very convenient.
When you have a chance to visit Sally's Apizzeria, on Worcester St. in New Haven, if you go late at night, when you enter this small restaurant- smile and say "Go UTEP!", cause the guy baking the pies at that hour is a UTEP man(University of Texas at El Paso, of course, to us Yankees in New England.
I went right by that Pizza joint near Rockingham, when I was up there last year.

Jaguar,
I have lived in Danbury for 9 years and know nothing of any racebook in the area . The closest OTB is in Brewster, N.Y., about 20 minutes away from Danbury.

Jk3521 and Jaguar,
Hey, 20 minutes is pretty darned close to me. It is a heck of a lot closer than I am presently from the Orlando Jai Alai fronton which is about an hour or so from where I am living now.
Jaguar, I can't wait to go to Sally's Apizzeria and hit up the gent from UTEP! Heck, I played baseball in college (a long time ago) and we played UTEP several times. I have also been to El Paso on many a business venture. So, "GO UTEP it is"!! hee! hee!!
Thanks again Jaguar.
Have a Great Evening.

Jaguar,
It appears that we won't be moving to the Danbury, CT area after all. Instead, I just got the word today that I will be going to the Raybrook area (up near Lake Placid and Saranac Lake). I hope that they have some OTB's up that way?
Take it EZ and I will holler at ya later!
Hope you had an excellent Thanksgiving Holiday.

Vinnie,
It's beautiful up there, just make sure that you have strong doors on your home- the brown bears are hungry and aggressive in the North Country.
Down here we don't have a bear problem, but we sometimes have a problem with 2-legged rats.
Lots of luck in your new duty station.
All the best,
Jaguar
