I am just itching to talk about horse racing tonight.
As such, I have set up an impromptu conference call.
It will start at 7:45pm (pacific) and go for about 30-45 minutes. Anyone interested in joining in should send me a PM now and I will send you the call info back.
The call is billed as standard long distance at your regular rate.
Please note, also, that tis is not a HorseStreet commercial. Just a live chat about horses. (Callers are limited.)

Dave:
Why not use Yahoo Messenger Conference Call sometime in the future?
That way there is no long distance charges. That's the cheapskate method I use for chatting with someone long distance, if I know they have a computer. That way I have more money left over to bet on the horse races...lol.

You still actually have to pay extra for long-distance?

Game Theory,
I'm assuming your question is directed toward Dave.

For those unfamiliar with Yahoo Messenger and want to use the Conference Call feature, you have to have a microphone with a cord and jack. I think you can buy a microphone at a place like Circuit City or any other store that sells computer accessories. I can't remember what I paid for my microphone (it's been awhile), but I don't think it cost that much.
Set up the Conference Call time with your contacts. Then, one way to set up the Conference Call further, is to plug the jack into your computer. Next, start the Conference Call feature. Make sure your speakers are turned on. Next, invite your contacts on Yahoo Messenger to the Conference call. Wait till they've been added to the room list. And away you go taking turns at the mic.
I forgot to mention, that some people have headphones, so that can change the procedure slightly.

No, you. I didn't think anybody paid for long-distance anymore, at least not on a call-by-call basis. Especially with services like Skype -- call any number in the country from your computer for free.

Game Theory:
Yeah, I have heard of the method of calling someone from their computer and directing the call right to the other person's telephone. I thought there was a slight charge using that method. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check into the name you provided.

I have never tried it. Will it handle 50 people?
Someone else pointed me to a free one just a few days ago. I may consider them as well.
And, yes, I still pay for long distance because I want perfectly reliable service and am willing to pay the $0.05 per minute or whatever.

I had Optimum Voice for 2 years and it never dropped a call (cable company VoIP). Just $35 a month. Dropped it because didn't need two phone lines anymore and I need Verizon for the TiVo. Got all kinds of advanced features as well and cheaper international calls. Canada is free as well.
Even with Verizon I pay about $52 a month for free long distance includes caller ID, call waiting.
I know it's not really FREE but you don't pay by the call.

Dave:
Re your question about whether Yahoo Messenger can handle 50 people? Now, that's a heck of a good question! In my exuberance about using Yahoo Messenger, I never thought of that many people in a conference call. My guess is that Yahoo Messenger would only be able to handle about 6 to 8 people at the most. But...I could be wrong. Might be higher. I'd have to investigate further. In the interim, maybe another PA member would know the answer to that.

BTW, the problem with Yahoo Messenger is that everyone has to have it.
That is simply not an option for me.
