‘Killings bring the city to its bloodied knees’Behind the headline in Friday’s New Orleans Times-Picayune

NEW ORLEANS - The Big Easy’s murder rate is staggering. In a single, recent 24-hour period six people died, including a 36-year-old mother gunned down in front of her husband and 2-year-old in their own home.

Two hours after I arrived at work Friday morning, two more victims were found dead, bringing the total number to 14 people killed in one week.

Even to a city with a history of violence it’s frightening. Peter Scharf is a noted criminologist with the University of New Orleans. He’s been crunching the numbers. Murder rates are usually calculated by number of killings per 100,000 residents.

Ralph – thanks for the link.

No doubt the usual suspects will label you as mean and uncaring for not understanding the plight of the underprivileged in society. If we would only send more taxpayers money into NO this could not happen - yada, yada, yada........

Can't remember when I saw the TV special, but basically one of the problems is the LA / NO Judicial system doesn't do it's job. One of the big problems the investigation reported were leniant Judges - the criminals were simply not afraid that they would be prosecuted. Because of that, witnesses were reluctant to testify and it was tougher to offer plea bargins to the little fish in exchange for testimony against the big fish.

Funny, when these same criminals got to TX or some place that was not afraid to enforce the law. All it took was to have a few of them get some serious time before they realized "there was a new sheriff in town" - all of a sudden, they wanted to deal. Looks like the boys are back in town.

So how long will it be before Ray Nagin blames the Republicans in general and George Bush in particular for this outrage in his lovely "Chocolate City"(his term, not mine).
