Magna owns HRTV why would they let TVG have coverage? They want to drive players to Xpressbet. TVG would love to carry and have wagering for Gulfstream. The Magna/TVG (CDSN) issue goes back several years. Must be a newbie to not know about it.

it would seem logical anyone unable to bet magna tracks
as a result of the war with tvg, and with various otbs , simply stop betting those tracks
in protest of Stronach who is creating, for lack of a better word, a dictatorship
to all horseracing fans within the U.S.

Then again, perhaps all tracks and otbs across America should consider pulling their signal to Magna owned tracks, and refuse to accept xpress dollars for races exisiting on their televised sites.

While these competitors might suffer , perhaps it would end
this maniac's torture of fans of magna owned tracks.

as important, would breeder cup races at GPX, Sax,LRL be also blacked out
in future years? If this answer is no, than daily racing at these tracks,
in which future breeder cup entrants may be racing should be available
to all networks.

Best Solution is to get Dish Network and get both TVG & HRTV...

Yes, TVG is better... But, HRTV has hired a new Head so maybe their product will improve. The Santa Anita Preview was good, except for the gushing on Brother Derek in the Malibu, lost some cred there

I wouldn't be surprised to see direct tv pick up HRTV in the coming year considering the Direct TV divestiture by Fox (eventual owner of TVG) to Liberty Media.

Doubt it. They have a better use of the bandwidth for HDTV programming. I'd be more concerned about them pulling TVG. As I recall, HRTV and TVG are paying DISH Network in order to be carried. Usually, it is the reverse.

TVG wasn't on DirecTV until News Corp (Fox) bought the network, I think that was in 2000. Not sure how John Malone (Liberty) plans on positioning DirecTV now that he has control. I'd guess high end video (HDTV). But, as a rule cable and satellite services don't drop channels once they start carrying them--gets customers angry. So probably it will be status quo.

We've been through this before and once again, I say it's BOTH companies that are at fault. When TVG began, they were the only game in town so they were able to get many tracks to sign "exclusive" contracts. Out of nowhere, Magna decided to form their own company and of course, being owners of tracks, they decided to make their signal unavailable to TVG. The war began, and hasn't and probably wont be reconciled any time soon. That is why I decided to get Dish Network this year!

I never understood why they don't let HRTV and TVG take bets at all tracks. I mean why not let the networks fight over the viewers and take bet's from all sources. Won't this drive up mutual pools? Just imagine if the tracks only allowed certain casino's to take wager's on thier respective tracks. Does it not make sense to allow bet's to come from anywhere? I think it would be win win for everyone.

HGTV is much better in the winter -- TVG is better the rest of the year since it carries NYRA, CD, Keeneland, Calder, Hollywood, the Oak Tree Meet at Santa Anita in the fall, Arlington. (I would argue tht HGTV is a much stronger product editorially but that's for another thread.)

TVG and HGTV don't carry the same feeds for the same reason ABC and CBS don't carry the same shows. They are competitors. Now you can make a valid argument that there is only room for one horse racing channel due to the economics of the business, the need for scale which would lower costs, etc.

BUT, remember that even if they merge, the spillover of all the racing product on the network would require cable operators to carry TWO channels anyway. And many operators are unwilling to give up the extra bandwidth because -- as someone pointed out above -- they want to keep it for HDTV, on-demand programming, Internet, interactive TV, etc.

And of course operators will mainly carry TVG in the states where people can legally open an account. The exception I know of is Cablevision in New York and New Jersey but that might be due to competition Cablevision is getting from Verizon or the Dolan families long-standing ties to NYRA. (the founder, Charles Dolan, was or is on the Board of Trustees and his former COO John Tatta was a huge racing fan who started the nightly Thoroughbred Action show about 25 years ago.)

BTW, if by some luck, you are in a community where Verizon's FiOS has begun offering service, that service carries both TVG and HGTV.

I get Dish Network in the winter in order to have HGTV. DirecTv requires you to buy the Sports Package in order to get just TVG. Dish Network does not and it carries BOTH.

Please contact me if you are interested in getting Dish Network because of its rewards program -- a better deal for you and I.

HGTV?? Why is gardening such a priority for you in the dead of winter? My nana used to grow the best tomatoes you ever had right in front of the house in Maspeth Queens. Every dog on the block used to piss on the roots but never the less they made a great sauce. Does Martha Stewart still have her show on HGTV? She would be the perfect wife if I was 45 years older than I am.

For me I love HRTV, the tracks are not good but I like the coverage that focus's on the handicapping and less on the hosts. When the hosts speak it is more about the product and less about personal matters and small talk. Focus is nicely balanced with the slant towards raw info and capping, not touting pick tickets like we all just fell off the turnip truck.

TVG has the tracks but you are getting 2nd class information if you use TVG as your only source for video. Have to watch the NYRA live feed on the internet to supplement what TVG offers. I need shoe info and I need to hear late changes as TVG has dropped the ball too many times. What TVG does offer is lots of jokes, lots of pick 4 touts but really minimum raw info like paddocks shots, shoe info and late changes. TVG should try to cater a bit more to a sophisticated audience as I suspect most racing fans are dead serious players.

I wouldn't say I love HRTV mostly because I haven't had it long enough, but I will agree that their on air personalities give you more than just jokes and touts. The seem to be more for the horseplayer than the average joe.

but they say the same shit over and over. If I have to look at Jeff Siegals bald head and hear about "team valor" one more time I am going to scream. Jon White's delivery is coarse and Joanne Jones should be on without a partner because she does nothing but argue with whomever she is on with.

The other day we got a couple of hours of Laffitte Pincay's son translating his father's reminisces over and over again. It was the Pirate's birthday so he got his two hours on HRTV. I used to love Laffitte as a rider, but I am starting to hate him as a retired rider.

Did you catch the interview with her father "Professor" Gordon Jones on Saturday? Made me want to gag--and they delayed a race from TAM for the self promoting dribble. Then she was touting where her father would be at Del Mar for people who wanted to buy his selections. TVG is often bad, but never this bad. And its not as if "Professor" Jones had anything interesting to say.

Unfortunately Harvey is about 80 years old and I doubt that he is looking for a full time job. Fortunately he still does the Saratoga seminars at Siros and said that he would be back again this year if he was up to it. There is no racing host I have ever seen that is better than Harvey Pack.

I disagree with the criticism on HRTV
I've been watching pretty steadily this week and I love their trainer interviews -- not for any handicapping tips, but the little nuggets of background that I don't normally hear about training horses or horse behavior/activity in general.
I don't find Joanne Jones argumentative and even if she was that would be a relief. Handicapping is by nature an ornergy pastime and it would be great to see that passion reflected on TV. She knows body language extremely well and her voice is a great relief from Christina Oliveras' thin reedy vocals.
Why did TVG hire someone with such an awful presence? And it's not like she's such an expert on racing. Guess they couldn't find another Hispanic woman who knows anything about racing/handicapping.
(Now you want women sportscasters with presence and style, go watch Cindy Bronson on ESPN News and Linda Cohn on ESPN. )

Yes, I agree somewhat about Jeff Siegal, an overrated handicapper to my mind. (Perhaps about 15 years ago but I've seen some of the rationales for his picks recently and they are very pedestrian. No real insights or anything new under the sun.)
But for me he doesn't come on until later in the afternoon when I'm almost finished. (I can't play more than a few SA races.)
And please save me from :58 flat on TVG. On his early afternoon shows, Matt Caruthers is a calm, decent handicapper, not bad to watch. But his "puppy-upper" shtick went out with Howie Mandel and Bobcat Goldthwait 10 years ago.
