NICE JOB

There you go Anderon!

That's a nice way to end the new year! The traditionalists may someday realize what this game is all about. Especially when they come to the conclusion that there are those who know a bit more about their charges then they do, and guess what? The horses aren't doing the betting! When they do I'll quit this great game.

I also had a wonderful evening at good old Delta Downs hitting 2 Superfectas!

Happy New Year Everyone & Best of Luck!

Why the condescending attitude? Are you so foolish as to believe that people who employ other methods of handicapping can't make as much money as you claim to make at the windows?

That's a serious question, in case you didn't know. I'd appreciate an honest answer.

Why the condescending attitude? Are you so foolish as to believe that people who employ other methods of handicapping can't make as much money as you claim to make at the windows?

That's a serious question, in case you didn't know. I'd appreciate an honest answer. I apologize for giving you the wrong impression. I was not trying to be condescending toward those who attempt to use the traditional handicapping approach. I guess since I’ve been there and done that , I personally feel it’s a waste of time, money and energy. Here’s my honest answer.

I believe that following the money is at the very heart of this game. It attempts to pinpoint which entries are “Really going to Try” to win a race. It’s based on the How Much (money), When its bet (time before post), and Where (which betting pools are being affected). I believe these factors when analyzed correctly produce what I call a betting pattern. Each track seems to produce their own individual betting patterns. Yes, very often it's difficult to recognize these patterns, but fortunately people in general are creatures of habit. And guess who's doing the betting? As I mentioned, it's certainly not the horses!

Those who (certainly) have more knowledge about each entry, then those looking at just Past Performances are generating all of this unique money flow. They probably have more at stake too (in terms of the amount money involved). So, the ACT of betting actually becomes the tell-tale sign of Intentions. Why? Well, very simply because a group of (10,000) $2 bettors spread their money all over the place, while those “In the Know” focus their attention on getting the biggest bang for their buck. Does that have to be elaborated on?

I won’t go as far as saying it’s “race fixing”, only because it’s a game we’re playing. While those in the know do consider it a business like any other. In order to survive they have to make money! The majority of those playing it as a game, really don’t treat it as a business. Until they do, they can’t possibly consider themselves serious about making money over the long haul.

From early ‘70s until 2000 I held my own as avid speed handicapper. I never owed a bookmaker a penny. Yet I realized that there was something missing from my game. Once I found out what it was I gave up the handicapping entirely (when it comes to making real money). Sure I’ll still look at PP’s for Stake races. Why? Well its one of the few times you’ll know that they’ll all actually be trying to win for whatever the reason: Purse, Prestige, or Future Breeding. But again, it still all comes down to one element: Money!

As a player that’s using whatever selection process is desirable, you also have to decide on how you're going to treat this game: As just a game, or as a business. When you make that decision, as far as I'm concerned you've set goals. When you set goals, you're getting serious.

When it comes down to actually playing this game, I solved many of its ironies using my own approach some time ago when I did the same thing that the Racing Secretaries do every day with their condition books. They’ve established various levels of racing for varying classes of animals. Likewise, I divided my interests in this game into 2 basic categories: Stakes races for enjoyment, fun betting, and following the breed (from the best from the past to the present), and All other races for making money. Maybe I have the best of both worlds by approaching it this way? I can maintain my emotional involvement as fan of this or that Stakes caliber horse while realizing that the game is totally different when considering all the other classes of animal and how to get the most out of playing them.

There’s nothing like going to the track and watching them run, but I no longer burden myself with the intricacies about why “this or that” “did or didn’t” happen based on how I interpreted the Past Performances. I mean why trouble myself with that? All it does is create mixing feelings by either boosting or deflating our egos. Very often to the point where we think that we’re either a genius after 1 or 2 races (when things are going just right) or a complete idiot (when the results become strangely peculiar). The main problem with either situation is losing control, because these situations affect us emotionally. This can reek havoc with how we bet because very often we begin to second guess ourselves.

I personally always liked the idea of also dividing my betting interests into 3 categories of races: the Fun Bets, the Money Makers, and the Toss Outs. The idea is to try and determine in advance (if possible) which are which. With Stake races its easy, but with many of the others, a Money Maker can very often become a Toss Out at 5 minutes to post. The key (for me anyway) after tossing a race is not to regret passing it after realizing that I would have made a hit. I try to overcome this mental loss by looking at it as just something that I did right, but didn’t capitalize on.
Besides, there’s always another race!

Best of Luck!

I'll never understand making bets based on interpretations of what "insiders" are betting. We've discussed this on this board before. I realize some of these "insiders" will have information I do not about their horse. However, I have information about their horse that they do not have, and I also have information about all the other horses in the race that these "insiders" do not have.

I have known many owners, trainers, and clockers in my day. I've known several who were big bettors. Guess what? They all pretty much stunk. Their "tips", and I'm talking horses they bet heavily despite my protests many times, weren't worth the energy it took for them to vocalize them to me. Of course a few won here and there, but in the long run, so will throwing darts at your program.

Now, to top it off, some are trying to read to tote and trying to interpret who is betting and how, and judge intention. First, there is very little chance you will ever know where this "inside" money is coming from. If it is truly valuable information, I would almost guarantee that it is coming from a sharp bettor/handicapper rather than someone with supposed inside information.

The key is to bet things the public does not have. I think the tote is the wrong place to look. But, I've been wrong before, and if some are successful doing it, more power to them. Implying "traditional methods" don't work is silly though. You just have to have better information and a solid wagering plan to win. Come to think of it, the more I disagree with the public, whether "insiders" or not, the happier I am.
