CHRB ADVISORY: Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1)
A horse from Golden Gate Fields has been diagnosed as positive for the neurogenic strain of EHV-1.
Effective immediately, Golden Gate Fields, Bay Meadows, and Pleasanton are under quarantine. For the purposes of the quarantine, the three tracks will be treated as one facility. The conditions of the quarantine will allow the transfer of horses between the tracks but no horse may leave any of the quarantined tracks except to travel to another quarantined track. Horses may enter Golden Gate Fields, Bay Meadows, or Pleasanton from another facility but they will then be subject to EHV-1 quarantine conditions.
The length of the quarantine will depend on our ability to contain the spread of the infection. At this time only one horse has been diagnosed with neurogenic EHV-1. The School of the Veterinary Medicine at Davis is assisting in our infectious disease control efforts.
Racing will continue as normal during the quarantine period.
For additional information, contact the official veterinarian at Golden Gate Fields at (510) 559-7526 and/or Dr. Rick Arthur, equine medical director for the California Horse Racing Board, at (626) 665-8130.
