Long, long ago, back when college football was considerd a sport and not a TV money making machine, bowl games actually rewarded good teams and not average ones. There were four major bowls, all played on New years day.First came the Orange, folllowed by the Sugar,Cotton, and then the Rose.In the week before Jan 1,there were no more than four or five other bowl games, all considered minor. We had the Gator,Tangerine,Peach, and Sun bowls.Today, listed in our sports pages, are 32 bowl games featuring 64 teams. There are 119 teams playing division 1-A football. That means that over half of all teams are playing in a bowl game.Bowl games are cluttered with teams that went 6-6 or 7-5 during the season.6-6 teams do not deserve a bowl bid.7-5 teams do not deserve a bowl bid.8-4 might be considerd, but only for a minor bowl.Oh yes,way back then, college teams only played 9 or at most 10 games, not the 12 or even 13 games of todays squads.Way too many ho hum bowl games featuring average or even bad teams that no one really cares about, except the school administrators that get a nice check from the TV revenues. Can just see it coming;one year we will be given the Cockroach Bowl, featuring the two best under .500 teams. Is this poster just being a cynical traditionalist,or are there others that share my opinion? One thing for sure, out of the 32 games being played, only perhaps 7 or 8 have any interest for this viewer;the rest of the country can watch the others.
