Give me a standard to compare it too w/o ruining it too much.

DJ,
How about this...
Imagine a human sacrifice with a priest holding a still-beating heart in his hand with the owner of that heart looking on.
Yep. That ought to do it.

Sounds gross enough -- worse than "Red Dragon"?

Red Dragon was not even in the same league. However, in all fairness, Red Dragon was "finctionalized terror" and Apocalypto is... historic fiction.

is it just spectacle, or is there a decent theme that makes it compelling?

Most extremely violent movies - like the Halloween stuff - holds no interest for me.
This violence really was part of the story. I actually enjoyed the movie.

finally saw Apocalypto yesterday -- and glad I did. A very original interesting movie.
Not so much a history lesson as a great "snapshot" of an ancient time. Great acting by this (apparently) entirely indiginous cast. I can't imagine how one goes about even making a movie like this.
