just watched the documentary "Enron:The Smartest Guys in the Room", the book is probably even better, but a well done doc that gives a good strong whiff of the times.

It's a twofold problem. It's not just that there are people out there that are going to lie and manipulate you, it's that people WANT to believe they can make outlandish gains. 99% of people are not going to beat the broad market and should just invest in index funds. But people want big gains fast, and are naturally going to entertain someone who says they can do that for them.
