I was just looking at some old threads and noticed one about Gordon Jones quitting his radio show because he wanted to spend more time working on his new book. That thread was from 2003:confused: . His site (thoroughbredinsiders) only lists his first book (from the mid-70s if I remember correctly). Does anyone know if he still plans on publishing another book? I would love to read more from Gordon. (and how about Andy Beyer? Is he done with books?)

I think Gordon has been writing those books for years.

Yep, been talking about and writing em for over 20 yrs. He still does the radio show and does selections for Sam's Town.

Banacek,
My trips to Las Vegas always included a day at Sam's Town because Gordon was there and so was his handicapping prowess. I found him to be a gentleman with a passion for handicapping and wagering on the horses. He always had time to chat and make you feel welcome.
Then I joined Handicapper- Insiders! How Gordon ever got mixed up in that boilermaker outfit, I'll never know. With the extreme pressure on a daily basis to step up the quality choices ladder at a significant price increase, I stopped cold, let the outfit know what I thought and my trips to Sam's Town were no more!
Maxspa

P.S. I think Gordon loves handicapping the horses on a daily basis more than
writing those books!

yeah, I sent them my email when they started up and was supposed to get a bunch of free selections. I got nothing, but I did get a call from some guy and he was trying to get me to sign up for paid picks. I said I'll see how your free picks do if I ever get any. I'm still waiting.

I would enjoy reading more from Gordon, though.

For sure Max. I worked with Gordon on a project for his Pick-6 club when it was based at Hollywood Park, some 25 years ago. He was "writing" his book on beating small tracks at that time....never reached print that I know of. Dick Mitchell told me once that about the most you could make from a horse-race handicapping book was $25K and that was with a name publisher and broad distribution. With the big P6 pools in California, I figure that Gordon saw more revenue potential in P6 scores than he did from book sales.

Richard,
Thanks for your comments re: Gordon Jones! When I used to go to Sam's Town, Gordon had many people wanting his handicapping expertise. He would get several phone calls etc. during the racing day! Even with many interruptions he was always a gentleman. I had great respect for him as a person until the Insider business! Sometimes even with the use of one's name not one's handicapping prowess it produces a blurred image!
Great meeting you at the PA Saratoga get-together!

Well, I'd sure like to read another book by Gordon. Actually, other than the reissuings of books by DRF (e.g.Modern Pace Handicapping), we are really at a slow period for new handicapping books. I'd love to read another book by Andrew Beyer..no matter what you think of him, he's a great read. His last one was in what 93???

Calling Dick Schmidt and Dave Schwartz (and others), authors wanted!

Is he still on the radio ( internet) on weekends?

I heard a tape by him from one of the Handicapping Expos, where he talks about a way he "improves" the Beyers at small tracks - very interesting stuff. I love listening to the guy. He also talks about his grow up plays, and a few others.

I figured I would check one out, and this one seemed interesting. Apparently, horses that hit the turn first win most of the races. Wow, what a revelation. I just need to find that window that stays open until the turn.

I have the same perception Lefty.

Side note; (I hope he doesn’t mind me replaying this story; if he does it will be the last heads-up I get! :D ) A member / advertiser on this board was kind enough to give me a heads up on a horse he owns running at PHA the other day. I was working on closing day DMR and forgot about it until just before post. 10-1 MLO and 2 minutes before the bell was 9/2. I didn’t bet; she went to the lead and while on the backside the odds shot to 10-1. She galloped at $22 +.

Whenever I see this I try and remind myself, for every late drop there must be an equal / proportionate rise in others odds. We would all love to know exactly what are price is at the start, but the mid+ price animals do drift up more than are subconscious will admit to sometimes... IMHO.

What was the morning line on this horse? Many people take ML favorites and expect the odds NOT to drop.

NOW if this was a 20-1 ML horse who just ran last in 3 straight races, then you might be onto something.

I have a standing bet with my brother. I will gladly sit with him and write down the odds when they open the gate and compare them to close. I will gladly pay him for all the winners that dropped if he pays me for all the losers. Check it out sometime, you might be surprised.

Gordon Jones wins. So does Joanne Jones, when she can solely focus on betting.

Sams Town on Wed. Oct. 17 opened a brand new ultra modern race & sports book.
There are high definition tv's at each seat. They have two giant screens plus fifteen 104" plasma tv's plus another 25 or so smaller plasma. A great snack bar.

This is one beautiful race & sportsbook that must be seen.

On the first day that the room was opened Gordon put in a pick 5 group ticket at Santa Anita. The results were an opening day special because Gordon hit the $29,360 pick 5. Each $20 dollar bill received back $480. :jump:

Never been to a sports book ... or to an OTB, for that matter. Is cheering considered poor form, or is there continuous noise with so many events on so many screens?

All,
I'm glad to hear that Sam's Town has reinvested some of their profits into a new Sports Book . Imho it was long overdue!
However, Gordon Jones is responsible, in no small part, for this huge upgrade! Without his winning seminars a new sports book would not have even been on the agenda.

The racebook end of things is generally noisiest when SoCal is running. Most of the cheering happens, of course, in the last 30 seconds of the race.

If you want noisy, go into the sportsbook whenver an NFL game is being played. Every play is cheered and applauded by somebody, and it's usually the favorite and over parlayers who do the most cheering.
