This article, which I picked up from a newsgroup I read, makes excellent points about how a newspaper (and other news media) should operate. Not a long read - don't miss the comments (responses) from other readers. They are also highly worthwhile.

BTW, it is actually a commitment by a Maylasian newspaper to tell the news this way.

Dave – thanks for the link
Liberals fear debate which searches for the truth. It exposes them for what they are. NEVER, NEVER trust a liberal Major news sources are becoming more irrelevant by the day. Note the NY Times precipitous drop in readership over the past 6 quarters. The LA Times is in free fall.

What was strangely omitted in an otherwise fine piece was the lack of hard news by major broadcasters. TV news is 10-12 minutes of hard news per hour, 15-17 minutes of commercial time and the remainder fluff reporting.

Jerry Springerizing the “news” sells more papers, magazines, etc.. than does hard news. The Mcneill-Lehrer Newshour on public television stations across the country always takes the high road to reporting. Consequently, always suffer the lowest ratings of broadcast news.
