Does anyone play chalk exacta's and if so how.

If I think I can narrow a race down to 2 horses and they are chalk
I will still play if I really like one horse over the other. I have found that in S Cal (they post the payoffs in $1 increments instead of $2) that the chalk exactas sometimes are overlays. People see a big favorite and play it to longshots trying to score.
Why not play it to the other figure horse. I will give you 2 examples for today.

SA 1st Royal for Sure on top of Gamblin Town. Exacta will pay $5 for $1. Thats 4-1 on an even money shot. If this was posted as a $2.00 payoff it would be $10.00. People see $10.00 and say it is worth it, but if they see $5.00 they pass. This ccreates a little extra overlay.

Also

2nd Sa

Voldera on top of Culley

This one will pay $4.00 but I like it slightly better than the first.

It works a lot better in short fields for obvious reasons.

This is just my thinking on some races that we may pass that could be profitable. We won't get rich, but you should show a profit when the occassions arise.

Good luck

pic6vic,

You should check to see if quinellas do better yet, which is frequently the case. And if you can bet house quinellas in Nevada race books, that's definitely the way to go.

That where I got the idea from. I used to play house quinella's in
Vegas. This is the reason the S Cal tracks offer quinellas.
Their largest client (Vegas) did want to offer house quinella's because they would take a beating on short priced horses.

example

Ferdinand & Alysheba

I wound up not playing either as they were below my stated price.

As I am typing this the 2nd race was playing even money on the exacta.

Back to your quinella. On the Breeders cup with ferdinand and Alysheba. I went to every casino and most of them would not take a house quinella on the classic even though there were ten horse. I spent four hours with 3 people and only got down $1700.00.

But house quinella's on short price horses that are even is the best bet you can make.

I had that Ferdinand/Alysheba exacta boxed. A buddy of mine had $50 to win on Ferdinand, a lot of money for him. He was trembling when he saw that blue/white halter coming. I was pretty calm having played it both ways. Of course, Ferdinand did hold on and we were both happy.

That is what Rick ws alluding to . the house Quinella in Vegas is calculated by taking the win price times the place price and dividing by 2.

In other words you get the win price plus 5 or 10 % because the place price is usually 2.10 or 2.20. Now if you boxed the exacta you got a lot less than the quinella. If my memory serves me correctly ferdinand was second choice. The quinella paid something like 5.40, where as the exacta was about 6.00 but you had to bet 4.00(box). If this was a track quinella it would have paid less than either horse to win. I'm sure this is what rick meant by using house quinellas

I've done very well in the past on house quinellas in Las Vegas and Reno, many of which were longer priced and some of which were over the limit, usually 150-1. But, they were almost always better prices than those paid at the track.

I'm moving to Reno in about a week and I hope the race books are still as great as I remember them. Watch out Dave S., here I come.

Pic6Vic,

Thanks for the info. I've never been to Vegas. Just had a positive memory of the race and day. I may have dutched the exacta, can't remember, just know I had it either way.
