Where can I get this?
I installed on one machine fine, but the other will not get the download from MS - it says it was downloaded but will not install. Can I download it from some other site? Can't seem to find one that is just SP2 - a lot have a whole version of XP with SP2 in it, but I don't want that.

Tom,

I had a similar problem when trying to "upgrade" my laptop. Ended up having to play the email tag game with the "support" people at MS. And, yes, I'm using the terms "upgrade" and "support" very loosely.

After a lot of time AND frustration, their instructions did finally work. Hope you don't have to go that route but worth a try if you're not in a hurry.

Best,
LB

Arrrrrr, shiver me timbers, Yes, it is legit, BM.
I was at the MS Update/download site. Apparently, the SP2 got downloaded automatically a long time ago, but I refused to allow it to install. Now, I can download it again, but it will not install.

What in the wild wild world of sports is going on there?
OK, skip 2 and go to 3.

If you still want the deuce

Installation
Because of the number of changes that have been made, SP2 is rather large (270MB) and can take between 20 to 60 minutes to install depending on the hardware that it is being installed on. Like other service packs, it is highly recommended to close any open applications and back up any critical data before installing. On a standard install the user will be prompted to accept a license agreement, and then for a path for the backed up system files the install will replace in case an uninstall is needed, then the install will begin. After the installation is finished, the user is prompted for a restart. Depending on the configuration of the machine before SP2, the default behavior after the restart varies. If Automatic Updates are set to anything other than Automatic, or the machine is Personally Managed (not a member of a domain) a screen is displayed prompting to turn on automatic updates. For a good overview of the installation and several great links go to Microsoft’s SP2 installation support page at: Installing Service Pack 2 (SP2) (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;ln;xpsp2getinstall)

BM - that is OFFCIE SP2, I need XP Sp2.
And getting it from MS is out - you can't jsut simply download the file - they have to invade your compter and then come back adnt ell you all the other crap you need. I do not intend to download that windows certificate crap, and the stupid update site keeps telling me I already have SP2 - which I do not.

What is with this POS company anyway - a simple file and they cannot figure out how to just download the damn thing?

thanks anyway.

thanks anyway.Tom,

I'm not as big a M$ hater as many people are here, so I managed to figure out a way to d/l SP2 directly. Just for you, here's the link. It's around 266 meg so the d/l will take awhile.

You can order a CD with just SP2 from the MS link below, I think that is your best bet to diagnose the problem.

Have you checked your computer for spyware that may be preventing the SP2 install?

As per MS.

If T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation is installed on your computerloadTOCNode(2, 'resolution');We discovered a compatibility issue between Windows XP SP2 installation and a third-party advertising program that is named T.V. Media after Windows XP SP2 was completed. The issue occurs when you have T.V. Media installed on your computer, and you try to install Windows XP SP2. In this case, you receive the following error message and the Windows XP SP2 installation process fails:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer... Technical information: STOP: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component} This application has failed to start because winsrv was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
To help you avoid a failed Windows XP SP2 installation from Windows Update or from Automatic Updates, we have blocked the download of Windows XP SP2 to computers that have T.V. Media installed until T.V. Media is removed or Critical Update 885523 is installed to fix the issue.

If you want to install Windows XP SP2, you must completely remove T.V. Media from your system or install the 885523 update. The simplest way to remove T.V. Media is to use the Adware T.V. Media Program Removal Tool (KB 886590) that removes T.V. Media. After you remove T.V. Media or install the 885523 update, Windows XP SP2 will be available to install from Windows Update or from Automatic Updates. For more information about the Adware T.V. Media Program Removal Tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Notes •T.V. Media is typically installed when you install other programs or when you visit Internet Web sites that are supported by T.V. Media advertising. Because of this installation behavior, T.V. Media may be unwanted software.•If you want to reinstall T.V. Media after you install Windows XP SP2, you must locate the program or the Web site that originally installed T.V. Media. •If you have already installed Windows XP SP2 on a computer that is running T.V. Media, click the following article number for information about how to recover your system: 885523 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885523/) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885523/) You receive a "Stop: c0000135" and "winsrv was not found" error message after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2
•We recommend that you install and run a tool that removes unwanted software before you install Windows XP SP2 on your computers. A variety of tools that detect and remove unwanted software from a computer are available from third-party companies.
