Classy move by Magna, the old firing via e-mail move.

From DRF:

Stauffer out as Gulfstream caller
By MARTY McGEE
Vic Stauffer, the race-caller at Gulfstream Park since 2000, has been notified by track management that his services have not been retained for the 2007 meet.

Stauffer, 47, currently is working at Hollywood Park, where he has called races since 2002. He also has called races within the last year at the Sonoma County Fair in northern California and has served as a part-time analyst for Television Games Network. He has been calling races since 1985.

Stauffer said he was notified by a Gulfstream official by e-mail last week that he is not being rehired. Phone calls to Gulfstream officials on Tuesday were not returned.

Gulfstream, a Magna Entertainment Corp. track located in Hallandale Beach, Fla., will run from Jan. 3 through April 22.

Notified by E-mail? That's gotta hurt.

They don't have his Mobile, or House Phone? At least send me a certified letter. By E-mail strikes me as things were not peachy between him and the check signers.

I wonder if the "Your Fired" E-mail came sandwiched between a Cheap Viagra and an African Investment Opportunity e-mail.

Fired by e-mail. That just sucks.

Nice move. Clearly no love lost as V was willing to divulge notification via e.

How do they hire people - By contacting next of kin?

Durkin back?

Doubt it...they would have to come up with $$--something in short supply at Magna. Plus doesn't Durkin spend part of the year in Italy??

I think it was Radio Shack that laid off HUNDREDS of employees via email. It made the nightly news a couple of months ago. Unreal.. and yet not so. That's just the kind of working/corporate world we live in now.

Did Travis get the job?

I wonder if Vic being cozy with TVG had anything to do with this?

This really ticks me off,VS is my favorite race caller in all the land.No class at all letting someone go via email. One thing we all can bet on;either he will soon land another spot at a major track,or he will become a permanent host at TVG.

No matter how much money he has, Franky will never be able to afford class.

I don't know. When I was released from my minor league umpire contract it was via certified letter. It sucked...still does...

There is definitely a benefit to this. He could even end up at a lesser track for awhile. I would think somebody would feel lucky to have Vic on their payroll.

There seems to be a pattern here. Wrona was first. Then Vic. Denman is the biggest name/largest paycheck left. Is he next?

If money is an issue, maybe they can revert back to the old Keeneland caller of the early 80's ..............

Well if Larry Colmus does not get the aqu winter meet it would be nice to see Vic get it. Question is could Vic stand the cold?

Why would'nt Larry do it? He seems to be doing fine when he has Called NY.

NYRA is not an ideal place for someone looking for long term security.

Let me submit one loud vote of NO for Staufer in NY.

I heard Vic say on TVG once that he goes south for the weather. He can't stand the winter.........

I say bring back Ross Morton. He was the racecaller at Gulfstream when I first had the opportunity to play there in the mid 80's. I don't remember when he was replaced, but I always thought he did a good job. For those not familiar with him, he's the racecaller at Finger Lakes now.

Another guy I'd love to hear again is Gary Henson, the son of legendary caller Harry Henson of Hollywood Park fame. Gary called the races at Longacres for years and had a short stint as a fill in at Hollypark. It seems there are more and more foreign announcers these days. I would prefer a throwback guy like Gary Henson or Morton.

I like Ross Morton too, but you won't be hearing Gary Henson anytime soon. He passed away in 2004.

How about Marshall Cassidy? Then again, the retired Mountaineer announcer is probably on pension and could probably afford to work for Magna. ;)

That'd be Tony Calo. He used to call NoCal until he was replaced by Wrona. Good caller although many don't like his style.

I could see that, especially if I was having a bad day. That said, I think energetic calls are good for the sport.

Ross Morton did the FL/Fla circuit for years. I think he is one of the best calers I ever heard, when he is on his game. He has had some periods where he seems bored, but all in all, he has been my favorite, and he has called FL since it opened in the 60's.

Or, is Keeneland's case, the silence was deafening! lol

I just heard Vic calling races from Hollywood Park this past weekend. Several posters had commented that he had ability and style. I agree! Now, I am disappointed that he will not call GP races this winter.

Maybe Oaklawn Park will upgrade from Terry Wallace! Hahaha!

Vic is NOT an upgrade over Wallace, as bad as Wallace can be.

Yes, I'm a hater of announcers who let their ego interfere with calling the race. Stauffer is Exhibit A, and freely admits it. Good riddance, though the email from Magna was unconscionable.

Seems to be the trend these days. Keven Federline found out Brittney was divorcing him by text messaging.

Very funny. For a second I thought Travis got a raw deal :D Seriously though I do hope the powers that be at Magna are considering Mr Stone for for the racecaller job at Gulfstream 2007. His style seems perfecty suited and we could use some fresh blood in there for a change. He would be the perfect choice in my opinion.

I emailed Brittney my offer to work for free and to sleep in the garage after performing my manly duties.

Just received her text message. Boys, I have a new job and line of work. I won't be posting for awhile, because I will be working overtime to please my new Boss. Tough job, but somebodys gotta do it!

Lets give Gulfstream the benefit of the doubt, maybe business is not going so good and they could not afford to buy a stamp( 39 cents may be a lot of money to them).

Ok...pause....I did not overthink the whole idea and come up with that notion. I simply feel that Travis would be the perfect choice as racecaller (his style, charisma and ability) for Gulfstream 2007. How both sides get from A to Z is none of my concern. I think TS is the up and comer in this game and should be offered opportunities as they arise. It would certainly be up to him to accept or decline any offer. I understand that aspect of life Hosshead but thank you for pointing out the obvious anyway.

I agree X, didn't realize it was the obvious. Sometimes when a big name (Frankie) comes callin', (if he actually would), the knee jerk reaction would be to go for it.
Don't know how much Travis likes his current situation.
Just saying that I would really have to think about the long term aspects of any relationship with Frank S.
