Watching it now. I've never paid any attention to weight, but Yeats is assigned 130 pounds. Seems the best horse and has the best jockey ,wonder if weight will be any factor. :)

was hoping Dettori would continue his streak from Churchill, but guess not.. are any of these horses bred for this distance? looks like Japanese horses are making the headlines again.. there were some eye popping exactas in the earlier races ($1800 something i think for one race)

The Australian commentators wrote off Dettori's mount after a poor showing in the paddock

Wow, they held their primo card of the year in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon. Did you see the crowd? Holy smokes, it looked huge.

So, should the Breeders' Cup people take note about the Tuesday afternoon timeslot? Or was it a holiday in Australia where everyone was off work?

Either way, it looked like everyone was having a blast, judging by the roars for each race.

And 24 horses in a 2 mile, $5 million feature - talk about player friendly.

Great one-two finish two by the two Japanese horses (DELTA BLUES 15-1, and POP ROCK 5-1). They had it all to themselves in the final 200 metres it seemed.

Great show they put on down there. It made me overlook the single-color saddle cloths thing! :D

The Melbourne Cup is contested on a local offical holiday, although the whole country tunes into Australia's greatest day of racing. There is plenty of pomp and circumstance around the race, especially with Makybe Diva a mare taking the prior 3 Cups.

Aussies can throw a party. Look at the Aussie Rules Football Grand Finale as an example. Its abouuuuut as big in Australia as our Super Bowl is here.

Derby Day was @ 129,000+ was the largest crowd for a sporting event in the modern day history of sport in Victoria.. Which means Australia as the best the other states could do would be 50 - 60,000 as the facilities just can't cop it...

Outstanding....

Horse Racing No 1....

Only in Aussie.... But wait for next year....

How many Japanese will flock down under to support their charges..

The Melbourne Cup has gone to a new level and will now become very hard for the locals and Kiwi's to get in..
