View Full Version : Circulation Plunges at Major Newspapers

From one of the plunging papers:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/30/business/media/31papercnd.html?ex=1319864400&en=e085b0aa9ab0ddb3&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

I know a lot has to do with the Internet, however could it just be that many people don't want news with a pre-mediated or left agenda. I for one stopped reading papers like the NY Times years ago, for many reasons especially the fact they are no longer trustworthy about the reality of events that they are reporting on. Secondly, I's rather prefer a paper with my right-leaned perspective if I had to choose between the two.

Now I understand your posts. You really don't want the news. You prefer a paper that conforms to your already foregone conclusions. Ok, it's a free country. That's legit.

CD sales are down as well. Does that mean people don't want songs with a pre-meditated agenda?

I tend to read too many posts about people who cry about something yet are an EVEN LARGER offender at what they are crying about.

I really do not see your point, since you are posting and reading on the Internet, so you must know that many people use it for their daily news.

If I took your question at face value without a pre-meditated agenda, I would tell you that the MAIN reason I get my news from the Internet is that it is INSTANT.

It was tragic to hear about Corey Lidle's plane crashing, but by the time it was reported in the papers, most people already knew what happened. There was really no way to "spin it", as your conspiracy theory hints.

If anything the Internet keeps the papers honest and on point. If they try to spin something, there are literally hundreds of posts on what they are doing wrong.

One last thing, I STILL buy a paper almost every day. I would be the first one agreeing with you if I thought your post had any veracity.

best to you,
Jim

oh yes let's not have an open mind in the news. One good way to check a story's validity is to go to Australian, English, Asian, etc. news websites. When they are all the same, one has a better handle on an event.

gentlemen, are you serious?

I said that If I couldn't get a paper that was objective, I'd prefer a right-leaning paper. No one here could seriously believe that the New York Times is objective. All one has to do is look at the editorial pages to figure out that.

I linked to the story from a blog. The NY Times is not fit for my dog to piss on.

How left has the NY Times become???? Well for the first time since Watergate, the NY Times did NOT endorse a single Republican canidate for office, despite making over 100 endorsements for public office.

Link from another liberal rag:
http://blogs.nydailynews.com/dailypolitics/archives/2006/10/post_42.php

You can believe what you want to believe, but I'm certain that the NY Times does not represent what I would call "objective reporting" by a country mile (that's 8 furlongs at least).

I buy the local paper only for "local" news, everything else is old hat with the exception of the funnies. For years now I haven't read the letters to the editor, they were always about more ways to spend our money or someone bitching about their neighbors dog crapping on their lawn. The editorials were so far left anyone in the middle or on the right would risk their sanity attempting to read them. It takes me three or four min to read it and a couple seconds to cut our the crossword puzzle for the wife. On Sunday, the wife spends more time clipping coupons than she did all week reading the paper. Local news to her is, who died and who's getting married. Pure and simple, the paper sucks with the exception it can be recycled or used to train you dog.

T.D.

46, I looked at the Best list & I've read every newspaper on that list, yes,
including the Christian Science Monitor. The NY Times is the best, imo.
It's true, the writers at the Times write complete & grammatically correct
sentences, which annoys most Rightists, since by & large they're not very
urbane. A newspaper is much more than just its political views: the ARTS
section, BUSINESS section, METRO section, TRAVEL section, SCIENCE & HEALTH
sections, etc and on all these issues there is NO equal to the NY TIMES.
Even Bush is sure to get a daily take on what the TIMES said. RE circulation,
the WALL ST JOURNAL -- a def Right-slanted paper, is also down & in fact
up-for-sale. The TIMES has many many millions invested -- and very wisely --
and can sustain any weak economy, although heads may roll there too.
It astounds me that limited brains would even diss this AMERICAN paper;
this country needs every stellar product going for it & we should all hope
the NY Times does very well, even though some won't spend the buck to buy it.

As a life long newspaper junkie, the NY Times ranks as the best paper I have ever encountered. Especially, the Sunday edition. No doubt, there are some political articles that can be viewed as slanted, but there is so much more. One would have to have his head buried deep in his ideology to miss it.

Plus, their website is as indispensable. If you like books as I do the scope is endless and addictive.
