umm, I was talking to my dad & your post came up & he said BOB HERBERT
"Secrets of Handicapping". I've got no clue; he said he programmed his
speed chart & it worked very very well --- his words. Who is Bob Herbert?

Could it be Pat Cabell who wrote for the American Turf Monthly circa 1965-68? Does anyone remember him?

Since Cabell didn't write a book, I'll try E.W.Donaldson who wrote Consistent Handicapping Profits in the mid 1930's.

Bob Hebert was the handicapper for Los Angeles Times in th 50's-60's. He used speed charts to handicap and made adjustments for track condition. Prof. Gordon Jones of the L.A. Herald-Examaner antidated Beyer by 10 years with his book on speed handicapping and variant theories.

First Variant ? By the Roman author Speedius for the chariot races :p
