Horses making final start in BC - how do they do?

Every year there's a few horses who are making their final starts in one of the Breeders' Cup races before being retired. I was just curious what the success rate in BC races are for these types - do owners/trainers really want to win, or is it just a last hurrah in a Grade 1 because all the breeding plans are set?

I have come to the conclusion that in stakes races they want to win with the females and show with the males in most, win in the classics.
