Avioli pushes for single online wagering site for racing by Ed DeRosa

... "The industry is squandering an opportunity as the only legal provider of Internet gaming," Avioli said on Monday at the conference in Philadelphia. "We have a golden opportunity in our hands."

Avioli suggested that the industry pool its resources and develop one online site for wagering.

"There's iTunes for everyone's music needs, so why can't there by iHorse," Avioli said. "We only need one site. One site would get more visits than multiple sites combined."Are there any traffic, volume, security, or other considerations that might present an obstacle to that proposal?

You think that customer service is bad with some sites now?!? Let there be one exclusive site to wager on and the customer service department of the newly created monopoly will be like getting bread from the Soviets.

New Jersey has a law that you can ONLY bet in New Jersey. Unless Steve Crist or Andy Beyer become President, we are locked down in NJ for life. :bang:

It is amazing that I can buy off Ebay from any country in the world, but if I want to bet horses, I can only use one site.

I guess the anti-trust laws are basically a tool for Government to do whatever they want.

I wonder what the Government will do with 10 cent bets once they take away all the unnecessary filing with the IRS.

But that is another thing that wont change in my lifetime. Gas will be $600 a gallon and they will stay make me fill out an IRS slip for winning $600, EVEN if it is on a $600 ticket!

Good line Z-Man!

I sent an oppposing email to the jokers at NTRA concerning too much monopoly already in other areas, and this nonsense.

I really wonder how many people will stop betting at Pinny and the likes. True, you probably wouldn't want to be transferring money back and forth frequently but you know they will come up w/alternative methods. But the banks hate this new law and from what I understand, unless you make a check out to "Offshore gambling Inc," or something similarly obvious, the banks will not make any attempt to stop it. Credit card transactions are a different story, but most major banks stopped cc transactions to offshores several years ago.

As usual Avioli goes off half-cocked and displays how ignorant he is.

iTunes is great if you have an iPod and/or Apple computer but certainly not for "everyone's music needs".

And soon, it will be Zune downloads only for MS platforms.

And how about the hundreds of thousands free/for a fee MP3 music downloads from more sources than there is time to list them all?

And would the iHorse wagering site be for NTRA member tracks only?

… "Simulcasting in February watching Aqueduct, Philadelphia [Park], and Laurel [Park] never had people running through the gate saying, 'My God how long have they been doing this? This is great!' " Philadelphia Park Chief Executive Hal Handel said on Tuesday during the Thoroughbred Racing Associations International Simulcast Conference in Philadelphia. "Live racing is a social event. It's fun to win with other people or jeer your friend for betting chalk, losing for the seventh time, and calling him an idiot."

… "Fans willing to bet at home are generally your more sophisticated player, so we definitely want to find out who they are," Dowd said. "We give them casino-style amenities. At Meadowlands they have private rooms. It's nice to sit at home with your computer in your boxer shorts, but you're alone. People like camaraderie, and they like feeling important."

"It's critical to provide a reward element to your player's club," said Carey, who noted that Hawthorne's top players qualify for a 4% cash rebate on their wagers. Dowd said that New Jersey provides a 3% rebate for its top players.

"If you don't provide a rewards program, then you're going to lose customers," Dowd said. "The program doesn't add customers, it keeps the ones you already have who would either go offshore or to the casinos."

Now, let me make sense of some of this:

I'm assuming that 'top players', as used by Carey, includes WINNING players.

So, I'm a TOP (WINNING) player and I'm getting my 4% cash rebate on wagers at Hawthorne or 7% at Pinnacle

WHILE

paying 30+% TAX on my WINNINGS (on top of the TAKEOUT)

Now, assuming I know my SCHTICK and can show 100k profit for a given year, why would 4% (or 7%) matter when I'm giving 30+% back to Uncle Sam? And you better believe I'm gonna be bled for every cent.

Of course, If I were a winning player (which KINDA means, PROFIT without REBATE), and/or weren't interested in POSING and getting ATTENTION I might just get my FAT ASS over to the local RACETRACK and play in ANONYMITY and save myself 30%.
Imagine the comradie of this action. I'd have a following in no time.

Of course, by doing so, I wouldn't be able to get the 4% (7%) kickback
and thus wouldn't be doing what everyone else is.

And I do really want to follow the crowd.
